Now that Thanksgiving is over and the Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza season is beginning I’ve noticed something interesting happening in my Disney Driven Marriage. My DH and I have been together now for more than six years, but have only been married for a year and two months. Even though we’ve been living together for a while, the holidays pre-wedding were always a little disjointed. There were holidays that we spent apart from each other, and holidays where we’d only spend part of the day together. We also didn’t seem to have our “own” tradition or way of doing the holidays. I remember the first year we lived together we were in a tiny apartment and had a sad looking Charlie Brown Christmas tree that looked thrown together with crazy tiny ornaments. We always felt out of sync with our traditions. It was almost like we didn’t know how to “do” the holidays as a couple… never mind a neurotic Disney couple!

Since getting married things have seemed to have fallen into place. We don’t feel like we need to explain why we aren’t going to be at one place or another for the holidays. Most of the family understands that we need to split up our time between the families. Its nice to be able to spend the holidays together. We also have noticed that we are starting to form our own traditions. We received an awesome wedding gift from a relative that has helped kick off our past two married Christmas’. It is a mantle swag (I think that’s what its called) that has Mickey and Minnie in scarves, with snow flakes and trees on it. Below Minnie and Mickey it says “The Z Family”. I know its corny but I absolutely love it. It is always the first thing that comes down from the attic and the first decoration we put up together. We also started gathering together our own ornaments… most of which are Disney. We turn on the holiday music, decorate the tree, and enjoy each others company while sipping hot chocolate. The tree looks better and better every year. It’s very significant to me of our relationship going from just a dating couple to a family.

I look forward to many years with my DH and creating more and more (Disney) traditions for the holidays. We are currently planning our first trip to the world during the holiday season in 2013… I know, I know, its a few years away but we DO plan our trips that far in advanced! What are some of your Neurotic Disney families favorite traditions during the holidays?
