Disney Movie Nights – they are just traditional. They usually involve pj’s, favorite snacks, blankets & stuffed friends. But, in changing times, there is a new concept of movie night…themed movie nights. I love this concept for so many reasons. It is more than just watching a movie. You can include themed activities, food, & decorations. Our whole family becomes involved. From planning, to decorating, to clean-up, it is a true example of teamwork & a great bonding experience.

Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins just celebrated its 50th anniversary, and I think we should celebrate with a Disney Family Adventure Movie Night!! It is such a fun movie from the music to the dancing to the small bits of added animation – it’s Practically Perfect In Every Way!!

Decorations

Red and white décor should set the tone for the evening’s fun festivities.  Start with a crisp white table cloth and napkins, add red plates with red and white striped cups and straws.  A flower adorned hat would make a fabulous centerpiece, and don’t forget to add an umbrella and carpet bag filled with goodies to the room.

Activities

Sidewalk Chalk Mural – Channel Bert and let your inner screever shine.  Recreate your favorite scene from Mary Poppins with sidewalk chalk!! From the penguins to the chimney sweeps to Mary Poppins flying over London using her umbrella there are lots of scenes from the movie to choose from.  Have everyone from the family create their masterpiece for a family mural, but don’t forget to take pictures it will be washed away as soon as the next rain comes along.

A Spoonful of Sugar – See who can stack the most sugar cubes onto a spoon they are holding in their mouth.  Have your contestant hold the end of the spoon with their teeth leaving the “bowl” of the spoon visible under their nose.  Have them stack cubes of sugar on the spoon and see who can stack the most cubes without them falling.

Go Fly A Kite – With longer summer days there should be plenty of daylight left so Let’s Go Fly A Kite!!  Whether you make your own or get them from your local dollar store flying a kite can be lots of fun!! Make sure you keep away from power lines and other obstructions for the safety of kids and kites alike.

Food

Fish & Chips – I think traditional English fare is in order for tonight’s festivities, and what is more English that Fish & Chips?  Whether you choose fish sticks or filets be sure to serve them with French fries, or chips as the Brit’s call them.  A definite crowd pleaser!

English Cucumber Sandwiches – Traditional cucumber sandwiches are made using the thinnest bread you can find (regular sandwich bread will work just remove the crust) buttered lightly and a layer of thinly sliced cucumbers.  If you are looking to add a little more flavor consider using cream cheese rather than butter and add dill.

Tea & Cookies – For a fun dessert serve tea (or milk or juice) in tea cups with bite size cookies or scones.  You can have your own tea party – but if you figure out how to have it on the ceiling let me know, I would love to be able to do that.

Have a great time with this movie & let us know what you did to make your Adventure special! Have a movie suggestion for us? Leave a comment  Be sure to post any photos on our DDL FB Group !
