Dream #9 – The Disney Film Project

There is a common thread amongst the people I’ve interviewed who are pursuing Disney; they tend to be involved with other Disney pursuits as well. Such is the case for Todd Perlmutter, co-host of the Disney Film Project Podcast along with wife, and Briana and Ryan who both are contributing bloggers here at the DDL. Each week they take a different Disney movie, watch it, and record a show about it, and tell secrets and background about it as well.

“It’s a lot of fun to do and very important to give back to the Disney community” says Todd. “I’m also a blogger and occasional developer for TouringPlans.com. Writing is something I really love to do, and writing about Disney makes it that much better.  I also help keep the plumbing going at The Disney Driven Life as their resident tech guy.  My official title there is Chief Technical Officer, but I’m a lot friendlier than that makes me sound.”

Dream #8 – Life is a Journey

With a website address that contains TheEnemyIsGood, a lot of people ask Connie M. which enemy is that? Connie laughs and points out how her blog started with a typo, she meant to nab “The Enemy is Food.” But with her new blog formally titled “Life is a Journey” in place, Connie was ready to blog, and embrace what she loved.

“The blog originally was started as a way for me to make a food diary but I gave up that idea when I realized that I am a sensory person and loved the sight, smell and taste of food. So…instead of trying to lose weight by dieting, I embraced my love of food but developed a new respect for it,” Connie said. “Slowly, I began to write less and less about food and now only occasionally include a photo of something I am enjoying on one of my little exploratory trips around Southern California. Or Disneyland!”

Dream #7 – Busy with Disney

With a passion for Disney, what pursuits does Craig Duncan squeeze in between a full time job and family? How about working on ‘They Disney Brit’, the UKs largest and longest running Disney podcast, the ‘Destination Disney’ radio show and the ‘Eye on Orlando’ radio show both of which are aired live on Florida radio shows. Then there is ‘Mousemeets’ which is UKs Disney annual fan convention and ‘Mousemag’ a free bi-monthly magazine all about Disney written by the Disney Community for the Community. “We have also done something different with our associated web sites. We have made DisneyBrit.com one of the best sources for Disney related news anywhere in the world. EyeonOrlando.com is a pure Orlando holiday portal.”

SO WHERE IS THE NEXT DVC RESORT?

Photo Credit: Dennis Brown, NDU 5

The past few weeks the web has been set a buzz again with the rumors of a Grand Floridian DVC addition.  The concept is apparently leaning towards the Animal Kingdom Villas model– convert existing space in order to sell inventory immediately while constructing a new building that will represent the bulk of the DVC inventory at the resort.

DISNEY NEWEST DVC ADDITION RUMORS

In the last few days Disney has applied for permits for adding a large building to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.  The building would be wedged north of the wedding pavilion and south of the existing resort buildings.  To make room for the new property, the existing tennis courts would be removed.  This would allow room for a parking lot for the new space.

GRAND FLORIDIAN ADDITION

Last week, there was an article in the Orlando Sentinel that caught my eye.  It said that a permit application had been submitted by Disney for construction around the Grand Floridian Area. In the permit, Disney describes a six to seven story building that is T-shaped and connected to the current building on the property by a covered walkway. (Orlando Sentinel)

WALT DISNEY WORLD UPDATE…HITCH-HIKING GHOSTS

As most of us know by now, for the past several months, Disney has walled off the left side of the Haunted Mansion queue line in order to bring a new, interactive one along with a change to the iconic cemetery and its headstones. I have been speaking to managers and cast members for quite a long time, trying to get any information about any major changes to the cemetery, if any. All have basically stated the same thing…Disney has not given out any details to anyone. Some cast members said they heard rumors that there will be some changes, but again, no details.

This rehabbed Queue line is expected to be complete in two or three more months, and the three Hitch-Hiking ghosts (Gus the traveler, Ezra the Skeleton, and Phineas the Traveler) fan favorites seen at the end of the attraction are “Going on Vacation” for a couple of months, as one cast member put it. In their stead, Disney has substituted animation to replace the “Peppers Ghost” effect we see when one of the ghosts sits next to you in your “Doom Buggy” as the Ghost that will follow you home. (This effect was named after John Henry Pepper who invented it in the 1860s.)  I was told that the Ghosts will return when the queue line re-opens. I have taken some pics of the new effect so you can see the difference.  Enjoy!

RUMOR: RIVER COUNTRY RUINS REVAMPED

A very interesting rumor has been brought to my attention in the last week, and I have been trying to shed some light on the subject. The rumor began around spring of 2010 and has been floating its way around Disney forums since, popping up now and again on almost all of the major sites.  This rumor?  A new DVC is being planned.  While this is pretty cool, the biggest part of this rumor is the possible location – the land that once was River Country.

SPARKS IN THE ENCHANTED TIKI ROOM

The Enchanted Tiki Room: Under New Management, an attraction in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom, is currently closed due to a fire inside the attraction last week.  The fire started in the attic of the attraction, but did not get very far as the emergency sprinkler system was set off, dousing the fire rather quickly.  There was a show going on at the time of the fire, prompting the immediate evacuation of the attraction and surrounding areas.  From what I understand, not much of the attraction was harmed in the fire; they are just keeping it closed while they find the cause and fix any possible water or smoke damage.  There has been no word as to when the attraction will be reopened.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO BETTER YOUR PARK EXPERIENCE

When you go to Walt Disney World, you expect to wait in lines.  It is a given and comes with the territory of being a very successful theme park.  Even though it is expected, people still wish that these lines would be less of a problem.  Disney seems to wish that also, which is why they have recently installed systems that allow for close monitoring of what goes on in the park.

DISNEY RESORT HOLIDAY SCHEDULES

The holidays are rapidly approaching, and I am sure that all of you want to place your requests with the man himself:  Santa Claus!  So did you know that you can NO LONGER find him in the Disney Resorts?!  In past years, you could find him in each of the Resorts for photos, requests, and hugs.  After many searches on the Internet for information on this year’s Santa Claus Resort schedule, I turned up NOTHING!

Feeling defeated, I decided to call Disney World’s reservation line.  The nice cast member checked and checked her database and also found nothing.  Not to be discouraged, she called a supervisor who informed her that Santa was rather tired this year and was not able to visit all of the Resorts.

PLEASURE ISLAND TRANSFORMATION

The big talk in the last week has been the major Downtown Disney announcement made last week by Disney Parks Blog. After letting the property sit empty for the last couple years, Disney has finally announced their plans to bring Pleasure Island back to life, though not in the same way it once was.

As of the completion of the project in 2013, the area once called Pleasure Island will be known as Hyperion Wharf, named after the street where Disney build his first big animation studio.  There are no clubs being brought back to the area; they are keeping with the idea that the area should be family friendly.

PLAYHOUSE DISNEY CHANGES

A beloved show of many preschoolers, Playhouse Disney, will soon be undergoing a change according to the Disney Parks Blog.  The stage in the Animation Courtyard area of Hollywood studios will be undergoing a marquee and name change to help promote the new Disney children’s channel, Disney Junior.

The new “Disney Junior- Live on Stage!” show will be very similar to the current Playhouse Disney show, including keeping a similar stage design and keeping some of the current scenes in the show like “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “Handy Manny” and “Little Einsteins”.  The addition to the show will be adding a new scene based on a show airing in February on Disney Junior called “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” where a young boy and some other kid pirates have adventures around Never Land and learn about teamwork. There is concept art for the new backdrop on the Disney Parks Blog.  A similar show change will be happening to the Disney’s California Adventure version of the show as well.  The changes in both parks will be coming in March of 2011.

ADDITIONS MADE TO “ONE MAN’S DREAM”

A few days ago, Disney Parks Blog announced the renovations to “Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios were finished and open to the public once again!  Being a beloved attraction of mine because of the history and connection to Walt himself, I had to find out what was added.

It seems the whole attraction was redone a bit, changing the look of the hallways that you wander through and helping to make some of the exhibits stand out. The “WED Imagineering Workshop” area looks new and has some new features including an original model of “It’s a Small World” in Disneyland and the Audio-Animatronic of Abraham Lincoln from “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln” from the 1964 World’s Fair. How cool! You can see a picture of Mr. Lincoln in the article on the Disney Parks Blog page.

AULANI – DISNEY’S HAWAIIAN RESORT

The greatly anticipated Aulani Resort is set to open the Fall of next year.  The resort is located on the island of  O`ahu, about 17 miles from the Honolulu International Airport in Hawai`i.  The property lies beachfront on 21 acres of property in the Ko Olina Resort & Marina development.

While this property is being marketed as Disney’s third DVC property outside of a Disney park, everyone is invited to stay with Disney at this resort.  Disney has recently opened a website dedicated to Aulani.  Through the magic of pixie dust, Disney apparently already has photos on the site of an unfinished resort!  The Disney company is so amazing!

NEWS FROM A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY

This week, there has been a small update from the Disney Parks Blog on the new Star Tours II attraction.  The news is about who the new pilot of the Star Speeder will be.  There was word there would be a new pilot named AC-38, also known as Ace.  With the storyline it seems that, as you are getting ready for your ride, he is the one who will be your pilot.  The surprise comes when you load into your Star Speeder and see not Ace, but a much more familiar droid is driving, one by the name of C-3P0! The story as to how 3P0 becomes the pilot has not come out yet, though I am sure it must be a good one.  From what I remember, he really hates space travel, which may make for a very interesting flight.  It was also announced that Rex, the pilot from the original Star Tours, would also be featured somehow in this new attraction, though his part is still unknown.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF GAMING

This past Saturday, a new, interactive area opened up in Downtown Disney’s store, Once Upon A Toy.  This area, called The Wonderful World of Gaming, was opened up by Disney Interactive Studios and allows customers to play some of the latest Disney video games before they purchase them.

There are three stations where you can play Wii games and seven stations for Nintendo DS playing experiences.  This new area of the Once Upon A Toy store, according to Disney Parks Blog, has “the most extensive collection of Disney Interactive video games in all of Walt Disney World.”  If there is a video game that you want, this is where to get it! The grand opening on Saturday had lots of giveaways and activities that were offered to all who stopped by.  The nice part about this video gaming experience, all of the games are family friendly, so everyone can get involved and have some fun! The games that are offered to try are the latest games, but you can be sure they will be updated when new games come out.  I know I would love to go there and try out Epic Mickey!

GHOSTLY UPGRADES AND A NEW FRIEND

There are some new news and upgrades from the Walt Disney World Resort this past week.

Our first news takes us to Magic Kingdom, where some construction walls have gone up in a somewhat unexpected place, especially for this time of year.  There is some walls blocking the view of the graveyard to the left of the Haunted Mansion queue.  I was surprised they would be doing construction on the Mansion in the peak of the Halloween season, but maybe it will not last that long.

FOOD AND WINE GOODNESS

The International Food and Wine Festival in Epcot is in full swing, so I thought I would give a brief low-down of the offerings for this year.

First, the new booths. There are 4 new booths this year, the first being just as you enter World Showcase from Future World called “15 Beers for 15 years.” What could they possibly offer? Well only 15 different beers! I am no beer expert, so I am not sure what the different kinds are or where they are from, but if that is your drink of choice, I would definitely check it out.  The next new one you see as you are heading towards Canada, right where the empanada stand is.  This one is “Charcuterie and Cheese” and offers Cheese Fondue, smoked meats and different types of wines.  As we continue counter clockwise around the world, our next new booth is past France, but just before the Morocco Pavilion, “Belgium.”  At the Belgium Booth, you can sample steamed mussels, waffles and berry compote, Godiva Chocolate Iced Coffee, and a sample of alcoholic beverages.  The final new pavilion is see all the way on the other side of the lagoon, in front of the China Pavilion; “South Korea.”  This booth features Barbeque short rib, lettuce wraps with pork and kimchi slaw, honey ginger tea (yum!) and some wines.
