DISNEY SM MOMS MAGIC OF HEALTHY LIVING DINNER

Last month I had the honor of attending the Disney Social Media Moms Conference. One of our dinners was called the Magic of Healthy Living Celebration. Disney has launched a healthy program promoting happy, healthy children who are making smart choices for eating and and who are getting plenty of exercise. We were treated to a special dinner with extremely healthy choices. Some of the other guests that were in attendance were the winners from the Healthy Living national essay contest.

Photo Credit: Lea R., NDM #114

Quaint beach-home looking buildings. A beautiful white sand beach. Lush landscaping. A spectacular view of Crescent Lake. And oh, yes, who could forget? Stormalong Bay. Where am I? I’m at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. Where else am I? At Disney’s Beach Club Villas, another Disney Vacation Club property–and one of my favorites.

DVC RESORTS – THE VILLAS AT DISNEY’S WILDERNESS LODGE

Photo Credit: Lea R., NDM 114

This October, I get to go “home”- back to Walt Disney World and to the Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. I can’t wait. This will be my 2nd stay at VWL and my 4th stay at Wilderness Lodge. Every time I go back, I squeal like a little girl when I walk in the door!

The Villas at Wilderness Lodge opened on November 15, 2000 and contains 136 rooms:  studios and one and two-bedroom villas in a 5-story building set on 4 acres. The villas are just a short walk from the main lodge and are surrounded by tall pine trees. Right outside the villa building, there is a lovely quiet pool with bubbling springs that is for exclusive use by guests of the villas although villa guests can also make use of Wilderness Lodge’s main pool.

THE ANGEL OF MEXICO

Recently, I was asked by the Innermouse crew to find some romantic places in Walt Disney World, and one of the first places that came to mind was the San Angel Inn. So I packed up my tripod and made my way to Epcot in hopes of capturing some memories. It was a quiet afternoon so it seemed that I had the place to myself. I love this pavilion because of the marketplace and the romantic late evening atmosphere. It’s a place where I could spend hours just sitting and enjoying all of its beauty. Looking at this image you can almost hear the sounds of the water fountain and dishes clinking from the nearby San Angel Inn restaurant. A beautiful candle lit restaurant, this place has a front row view of the Mayan ruins and a steaming volcano. With great food and atmosphere you can’t go wrong eating at the San Angel Inn. It seems that every time I take a look at this photo and close my eyes, I get transported back to this wonderful pavilion.

SASSAGOULA FLOATWORKS – BEIGNETS!

Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory is located inside the Port Orleans French Quarter Resort in Disney World. It’s theming brings you inside a Mardi Gras float warehouse building, where props of classic New Orleans are everywhere. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Some of the items they serve include pizza, burgers, BBQ ribs, pasta, a variety of baked goods, Po’ Boys, and regular breakfast dishes. The one item that they are known for are their beignets. A beignet is a French style doughnut that is deep fried and sprinkled in confectionery sugar. They are made to order, fresh while you wait. I love beignets! They are like warm little fluffy pillows of dessert greatness. They can be addicting! You can buy three beignets for $2.99 or six beignets for $4.29.

CINDERELLA’S ROYAL TABLE

Cinderella’s Royal Table is located inside the castle in the Magic Kingdom and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. On our visit we had breakfast which was served pre-plated all you care to eat eggs, French toast, bacon, sausage and potatoes. You can also have yogurt with granola and an assortment of pastries. You have a choice of juice, milk, tea or coffee.

The breakfast was just OK. It was just simple food that you would have if you went to a breakfast at a regular resort. I would have preferred a Denny’s Grand Slam over this breakfast. It is $44.80 for adults and $29.86 for children ages 3-9. Prices are subject to change depending on which season you are dining in. This price includes tax and gratuity. If you are on the dining plan it is considered signature dining and will require two table service credits. You are really paying for the atmosphere of the restaurant to be eating in the castle among the beautiful princesses.

WHERE IN THE WORLD TO DINE?

In my a recent blog contribution, Celebrating At Walt Disney World, I may have mentioned I’ll be celebrating my birthday on property for the first time ever next year.

My wife has been asking me everyday for the last three weeks where I would like to have dinner on my birthday. Each time she asks I have the same response:  I don’t know. Well, I think my answer is starting to wear thin on her. She’s afraid we won’t get an ADR at the restaurant I choose because it’s taking me so long to decide. I keep telling her we can always eat at Tony’s Town Square. For those who don’t realize it, I’m being sarcastic, and for the person who likes Tony’s Town Square, I am truly sorry if I offended you!

LOOKING FOR DRINK REFILLS IN EPCOT? CHECK OUT…

It’s not cheap to buy a drink in Walt Disney World or Disneyland. With the heat of the sun beaming down on you and all of the walking you have to stay hydrated, but this can get costly. Here is my favorite place in Epcot to rehydrate and save some money at it.

PECOS BILL TALL TALE INN

Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn is located in Frontierland inside the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. You feel you have been sent back in time to an old-fashioned cowboy saloon. There’s plenty of seating, whether it’s indoor or outdoor, and we found it easy to locate a table. I have heard, however, that this spot tends to be crowded during the lunch rush in peak seasons. This counter service restaurant menu includes taco salad, chicken wrap, Caesar salad with chicken, BBQ pork sandwich, Angus burgers, and veggie burgers.  It is known to have the best burgers on property, but the main event is the fixin’s bar: sauteed onions, mushrooms, cheddar cheese sauce, and fresh vegetables to name a few.

BRINGING OKTOBERFEST TO YOUR HOME

Oktoberfest is a Bavarian celebration originally held in Munich, Germany. The first Oktoberfest was held in Munich, Germany on October 12, 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. Meaning this year was the 200th anniversary of this celebration. The festival is held every year in their honor and is now celebrated around the world. People get dressed up in costumes, eat traditional German food and drink plenty of great German beer (or should I say bier). In this video, I’ll give you a tip on how to bring some of this German festival and those delicious food items served at Epcot’s Germany Pavilion’s  Biergarten and Sommerfest into your home.

TUSKER HOUSE FOR LITTLE ONES

Does anyone else have to look carefully when you type the word “buffet”? I am a Parrothead as well as a Disney fan and have to make sure I don’t subconsciously start talking about Jimmy. While I am sure he can set out a great spread, this story is about Tusker House, which I think is a great restaurant for little ones.

Tusker House is a buffet restaurant located in Africa in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It has been renovated within the last couple of years. In its former life, this was a quick service dining location. To access the restaurant now, you wind around to the left and back of the building. Here you check in with the hostess and you’ll be given a buzzer. There is plenty of space to wait in the outdoor seating area. My brother wants me to be sure that I mention the Dawa Bar located within this outdoor area. He recommends this little oasis. There was an African drum group playing during our brief wait and somehow Tink (12 months at the time) slept through the band. Once our buzzer went off, we returned to the hostess stand and were taken indoors to one of the restaurant’s dining rooms. Our server was very helpful and gave us a good idea of what we’d find at the buffet.

A GOOD DISNEY DEED

Every time I go to Walt Disney World, I buy a t-shirt. On our last trip, I bought two t-shirts, a golf shirt, and a sweat shirt, so it’s not unusual to spot me in Disney gear on any given weekend. Well this past weekend, I was in a local store wearing my Disney golf shirt minding my own business when a woman approached and asked me which Disney store I bought it in. I told her I bought the shirt at Mouse Gear in Epcot. When I said that, her eyes opened real wide, and she had this silly grin on her face. She said she’s a single mom to a young boy who is thinking about taking him for his and her first ever Disney vacation.

JIKO – THE COOKING PLACE

Jiko – The Cooking Place is located in the Animal Kingdom Lodge in Walt Disney World. Upon entering the restaurant you take in the sights of the African decor and intimate atmosphere. Along the walls the colors change to represent an African sunset. Above you hanging from the ceiling are white birds simulating flight. You will notice right away the twin wood-burning ovens that house a small seating area for an up-close look at the chefs in action.  It is a beautiful mix of nature and the African culture all blended together to create a serene effect. Jiko’s menu is a combination of African, Indian and Mediterranean fare. Not to mention an extensive list of South African wines. They have won numerous awards for their wine selections.

THE TASTES OF ITALY

The new pizza shop and restaurant coming to the Italy Pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase will be here in about a month and Disney Parks Blog has given us the latest scoop as to what will be on the menu.  Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria will be a 300-seat table service restaurant located near the back of the Italy Pavilion and one of the main features of the restaurant will be its wood-burning stoves used to cook the pizzas.

THE END OF REFILLABLE MUGS?

How many of you out there use refillable mugs at the Walt Disney World Resort? Do you use them often? Do you get many free refills with them from different counter services? Do you bring back mugs from previous trips and use them on your trip, or bring other beverage holders with you to use?  Well, enjoy it while you can because it looks like Disney is looking into a way to change the refillable mug system into an easily monitored system.

THE PRINCESS AND THE BLOG

When I started teaching, I was 22 and I literally had to practice my “tough” faces in the mirror before school.  I’m now in my pre-40s and I don’t have to practice anymore.

In fact, over the last snowstorm, we passed some time playing with costumes, and when I put on my old Snow White costume, spoke in a very soft voice, and watched my own kids quickly fall into line as they tried to impress the princess. In fact, there is much discussion of expanding my wardrobe to include the princess who reads (Belle), the princess who is tough (Mulan) and the princess who swims (Ariel) although I’d have to work on that voice.
