MICKEY’S NOT SO SCARY HALLOWEEN

One of the events I’ve always wanted to attend at Walt Disney World is Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party not just to see the special events but to get my hands on all that delicious Disney candy. Unfortunately for me this will not be the year I finally get to attend one.

The name of the party tells you the theme for this separate admission event. It’s a friendly fright fest where guests are allowed to dress up in costume and join the Halloween havoc. There are candy stations set up throughout the Magic Kingdom awaiting guests who are out to trick or treat.

MOUSE OF ZEN – A REVIEW

My first reaction when asked if I would be interested in reviewing a book for my blog contribution was it couldn’t have come at a worse time. My wife was already on my case for spending too much time on my Disney obsession, also I just started working on a project, and I’m preparing to begin a brand new job. I didn’t think there was any way I could find the time to read and review a book. Then I found out it was a poetry book and the only poetry I know are in the lyrics in rock ’n’ roll music. So, I did a little bit of research on the author and it was that research that made me change my mind. What I found was someone whose every word has substantive meaning. I found someone who has a love for his family, humanity, and Disney. Someone we all would and should be honored to know.

RUMORS OUT OF THE ORLANDO BUSINESS JOURNAL

With the rumors and news I wrote about last week, I decided to follow it up with a few more that have come out in the last week. The two rumors that came out this week are from the same source, the Orlando Business Journal and both rumors have been talked about in the past.

First rumor is that there really is a 12th country coming to the World Showcase in Epcot. While there are many ideas that people have as to what country should be added, it seems that the first choice of Disney is Spain, though there has been on confirmation.

MEETING THE HIDDEN MICKEY GUY

Most of us are familiar with hidden Mickeys and whether or not you avidly search for them I’m sure you have spotted one or two every time you visit Disney property.

Started by Imagineers, a hidden Mickey is an image of Mickey Mouse found in many different forms that have been discreetly placed throughout Disney locations most notably their theme parks. The most frequently used hidden Mickey is three circles representing a head and two ears. Other variations of Mickey can be more difficult to spot and one must have a keen eye to find them. No one has a keener eye than renowned Dr. Steven M. Barrett celebrated author of “Hidden Mickeys A Field Guide To Walt Disney World’s Best Kept Secrets” now in its 4th edition.

ARE YOU A MAGIC MAKER?

Why do you go to Walt Disney World?

For most of us ND types, we could write volumes about why we choose to spend our money (or other peoples’ money) at the Walt Disney World Resort. But there is one reason I want to particularly focus on today.

Recently, I was able to spend five nights at Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter Resort. I had heard so many people talk about it and blog about it that I thought I would give it a try. From the iron railings, brick inlayed streets, horse-drawn carriages and that ever present Dixieland jazz band music, you are transported directly to Bourbon Street . . . without the smell of urine and the sound of party goers until the wee hours of the morning.

DISNEY COASTER NEWS

A couple stores have come out this past week regarding a couple of the coasters on the Disney property, one that already exists and one that will hopefully exist soon.

The word from Animal Kingdom is that the Yeti has gone missing from Expedition Everest.  A screen is covering the area where the audio-animatronic yeti usually stands and will be there until mid June.  The yeti has been removed from Everest for some refurbishment, including fixing the movement in the arms, which has been missing for months.  In order to fully fix the animation of the yeti, work needs to be done in the actual attraction.  Expedition Everest is in need of a full refurbishment, one that will last close to six months, but this has not been scheduled yet as Disney is obviously hesitant to shut down such a major attraction for that length of time in a park that only has a couple “E Ticket” attractions to begin with.

CHANGES AT EPCOT AND DISNEY’S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

Big changes have been announced for two of the four theme parks in Walt Disney World that have mixed reviews coming from everybody.

Let;s travel first to Epcot to talk about the change that almost everyone saw coming.  That change would be the return of Captain EO to Epcot.  After its great success in Disneyland in California, it was only a matter of time before the other parks saw this change occurring.  The change is not just for Epcot, but for Disneyland Paris and Tokyo as well! Disneyland Paris will be adding the movie June 12, Tokyo Disneyland will see it starting June 30, and the final arrival in Epcot will be July 2, just in time for the huge Fourth of July crowds.

WALT DISNEY WORLD CLOSURE UPDATES

I thought I would update everyone this week on some closures that are happening in Walt Disney World. For anyone who may be heading down to the parks in the next few months, this is what you can expect to be happening.

The first closures, and the ones that many are curious about, are centered around the Fantasyland Overhaul currently taking place.  We saw the first closures related to this construction yesterday, when we said goodbye to Ariel’s Grotto and Pooh’s Playful Spot for good. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh façade is currently being changed for the new “Hundred Acre Wood” theming. Other closures taking place in the next few months, though no specific date has been set yet, include the Walt Disney World Railroad closing for three or four months and the permanent closure of Mickey’s Toontown Fair some point in the fall.  The Barnstormer closure for retheming has not been announced yet and the only other closure currently planned for Magic Kingdom is the Baby Care Center from May 14 to May 20.

The 3D movie will be closed from April 24—May 14 in order to make some changes to the attraction. WILL THE BACKLOT BE BACK UP?

1100904_closed

As many people have heard now, it has been announced that the Studios Backlot Tour and the Studios Catering Co. will be closed for refurbishment from February 15–March 28.  This announcement has brought waves of speculation as to the purpose of this refurbishment.  Is this just a simple paint job that will have the Backlot Tour open with a fresh look or is there something more to this?

DISNEY DINING BOOT CAMP

DISNEY DINING BOOT CAMP

There is a bit of advice often tossed out to parents: Pick your battles carefully.  The idea is that you can’t force your way upon your children in every situation, so choose the scenarios that are of the most importance to stand your ground.  Let the “less important” matters go by the wayside because they aren’t worth the fight and can actually cause you to lose the greater battles.

UNDERDOG, ALPHA-DOG OR SLY DOG?

UNDERDOG, ALPHA-DOG OR SLY DOG

In our family I’ve been homeschooling my children for four years.  I started with Margeaux when she was of preschool age, and she has thrived with this educational style.  Way back then we began learning the colors and shapes by studying Disney animation, carried on through Disney-centered phonics and math, and then we studied the countries represented in Epcot’s World Showcase.  She currently devours advanced Disney-adopted literary classics like Alice in Wonderland and Mary Poppins even though she is in the first grade, so it is obvious she has been served well with our choice to homeschool.  However, Miller has been struggling with his studies at home lately, and it has given me cause for concern.

ON THE JOB TRAINING

ON THE JOB TRAINING

The basic itinerary for our week has been set.  The few dining reservations that we needed have been made.  It is time for the task that all NDMs live for – designing a strategy for conquering the theme park.

I gather my three mouseketeers into our living room.  As a NDM, one of the responsibilities I hold is to teach my children the various facets of living The Disney Driven Life.  Among these, vacation planning is paramount, and this is a perfect opportunity to begin instruction in this crucial life-skill.

SAINT PATRICK

a-pura-cocina

I sit at my computer to check the park hours of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While I’m notating particulars about Extra Magic Hours for Disney resort guests, a pop-up box notifies me that I have received an e-mail from someone named Chef Patrick.

I open the letter to read a thoughtful note from the chef of The Hollywood Brown Derby.  He explains that he was contacted by Brenda about our family’s circumstances and is very interested in enabling us to visit the park.  He then requests an e-mail back specifying the items that my children cannot eat.

A MORSEL THAT’S HARD TO SWALLOW

sad-silhouette

It is decided that we will only spend one day in a theme park during our upcoming trip.  Although I have been doing my best to not allow my newly acquired Disney phobia to get the best of me, it has been hard for me to entirely shake it.  Traveling with our special dietary needs is a concept that still makes me very uneasy, so I decide not to set our expectations too high.  We will brave one park for one day, and we will remain content within that limitation.
