DVC – Why the Numbers Don’t Add Up for Me

I recently received an offer from Disney.  They would send me a free $25 gift card if I would call the number they gave me and listen to a 10-minute presentation on the Disney Vacation Club.  Never one to pass up anything free, I took them up on this offer.

I’ve looked at DVC before.  I really do like the concept of owning a little piece of Disney World.  And with us going there every year, it sounds like it might save us money in the long run.  But every time I’ve considered buying into DVC, I’ve never been able to see the cost savings.  At the time I received my offer, they were offering discounts of up to $20 per point purchased.  If there was ever a time to buy into it, this was it.

Disney’s Vero Beach Resort Getaway

Many of us enjoy our time in Walt Disney World’s parks. However, even the most die hard Disney fans often get tired after several days of walking the world-class theme parks! If you are interested in finding a way to enjoy a bit of Disney while also enjoying some relaxation, consider a few nights at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.

This resort is located in Vero Beach, FL, which is a little over 100 miles or 2 hours away from Orlando, FL. The resort is located right on the Atlantic coast, thus offering beautiful, oceanfront first class accommodations.

DVC RENTALS THE SAFE WAY

As you may recall, last week, I wrote about renting DVC points from individuals.  This is a great way to help you save money, help out the DVC owner who cannot use the points and get to see these great accommodations at a fraction of the price.  However, many of you have expressed your concern about the fact that you have no direct control over the DVC rentals and that there are many people who have paid for the points rentals only to get to Disney and discover that the accommodations were never booked!  They also are not able to locate the “DVC owner”.

DVC THE “VALUE” WAY

As many of you know our family joined the Disney Vacation Club in May of 2009. Our home resort is the Animal Kingdom Villas (AKV) and we bought into the Jambo House phase of the project.

We chose AKV for several reasons when we made our purchase. First, the decor and ambiance felt so much more like “home” to us than the Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary Resort. The warmth seemed so much more inviting to a young family. We also loved the idea of being able to walk outside and be right in the middle of an African savanna and the African music and culture was great. Finally, we noticed that for the type of vacationing we wanted to do AKV offered us the fewest points per night out of the available resorts. So, when we finally made the plunge last May we bought into Jambo!

DISNEY NEWEST DVC ADDITION RUMORS

In the last few days Disney has applied for permits for adding a large building to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.  The building would be wedged north of the wedding pavilion and south of the existing resort buildings.  To make room for the new property, the existing tennis courts would be removed.  This would allow room for a parking lot for the new space.

GRAND FLORIDIAN ADDITION

Last week, there was an article in the Orlando Sentinel that caught my eye.  It said that a permit application had been submitted by Disney for construction around the Grand Floridian Area. In the permit, Disney describes a six to seven story building that is T-shaped and connected to the current building on the property by a covered walkway. (Orlando Sentinel)

WE BOUGHT INTO THE MAGIC

Photo Credit: Dennis Brown, NDU 5

One of the most precious memories of my childhood was my first trip to Walt Disney World in the summer of 1990.  As the son of Los Angeles natives, I grew up going to Disneyland, but, to me, that was nothing compared to being able to visit three parks and surround myself in the world of the Mouse for a whole week.  I had to be the luckiest kid on earth and could not wait to go back.

CROSSROADS OF THE WORLD

Times Square is generally regarded as the “Crossroads of the World,” but the same could be said about Disney World. Over the years, I have bumped into neighbors, former neighbors, cousins, friends, and people I knew but couldn’t quite place.  When you travel 1,500 miles to a place as vast as Disney World, you simply do not expect to see anyone you know.

One of the strangest encounters, or series of encounters, occurred during a week-long visit back in April of 2007.  The beginning of the National Hockey League playoffs coincided with one of our non-park days, and, as Buffalo Sabres fans, we headed to the ESPN Zone at the Boardwalk to catch the Sabres’ first playoff game against the New York Islanders.

RUMOR: RIVER COUNTRY RUINS REVAMPED

A very interesting rumor has been brought to my attention in the last week, and I have been trying to shed some light on the subject. The rumor began around spring of 2010 and has been floating its way around Disney forums since, popping up now and again on almost all of the major sites.  This rumor?  A new DVC is being planned.  While this is pretty cool, the biggest part of this rumor is the possible location – the land that once was River Country.

DISNEY’S SARATOGA SPRINGS RESORT AND SPA – STUDIO ROOM DETAILS

Last week, you may recall that I discussed renting points for a stay at Disney’s Saratoga Springs.  My family stayed for 5 nights in a Studio there at Saratoga Springs.  This resort is one of Disney’s Vacation Club properties with 6 sections—The Springs, The Paddock, Congress Park, The Carousel, The Grandstand and the Treehouse Villas.  The accommodations include those that meet the needs of one visitor in a studio to the needs of a family traveling with up to 12 guests.  The grounds cover 65 acres and is located in the Downtown Disney area.  In fact, Downtown Disney is an easy walk from the Congress Park section!

MY DVC RENTAL

I am not a DVC (Disney Vacation Club) owner.  I have always wanted to stay in a DVC property but have found the Disney prices for the DVC resorts to be unattainable.  I had frequently priced out staying at various DVC properties but could not justify the costs.

In recent months, I had read that some people rent points in order to afford staying in these rooms.  I am always looking for ways to save money, yet have the Disney vacation of my dreams.  As a result, I found a board that had members of DVC that were renting out their points.  I had never frequented the boards prior to this, so do not feel that you must be a “board regular” to rent using the boards.  I emailed the owner of the requested number of points needed after doing some research on the accommodations I wanted to request: I found online “calculators” that helped me determine the number of points I would need for the days of travel for the defined accommodations.

LIFE AFTER MOM’S PANEL REJECTION

I did not notice the email when it arrived that Tuesday evening.  In this junk-mail infested era, the subject line “Congratulations!” simply did not grab my attention.  It was not until Wednesday afternoon, during a routine “social network” check, that I saw congratulatory messages to those advancing to the second round of the Disney Moms Panel search.

My heart sank.  How could I not even make it past the first round?!

Usually, I am able to acknowledge the superior knowledge, dedication, and passion of other Disney fans.  Deep down, I knew that there were thousands of applicants who were, most likely, more qualified to serve as members of the Moms Panel.  But at that moment–a moment defined by pure selfishness–I thought the Moms Panel Selection Committee had made a huge mistake by failing to choose me.

AULANI – DISNEY’S HAWAIIAN RESORT

The greatly anticipated Aulani Resort is set to open the Fall of next year.  The resort is located on the island of  O`ahu, about 17 miles from the Honolulu International Airport in Hawai`i.  The property lies beachfront on 21 acres of property in the Ko Olina Resort & Marina development.

While this property is being marketed as Disney’s third DVC property outside of a Disney park, everyone is invited to stay with Disney at this resort.  Disney has recently opened a website dedicated to Aulani.  Through the magic of pixie dust, Disney apparently already has photos on the site of an unfinished resort!  The Disney company is so amazing!
