When the hat comes down

The Sorcerer's Hat at Disney's Hollywood Studios

The hat is coming down. Soon. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the giant Sorcerer Mickey hat, enjoyed by some and hated by others, will be removed, or more likely moved to take up residence elsewhere. Walt Disney Imagineering installed the massive structure for the 100 Years of Magic celebration in late 2001 but it was never meant to be permanent. Because of a few financial quirks it stayed in its location for longer than was intended, however the time has come and the hat will soon be gone. I wonder, will Hollywood Studios lose some of its magic without its magical icon? What happens when the hat does come down?

Even Mickey Makes Mistakes

© Disney

One of my most beloved attractions in Disney World- Magic Kingdom specifically- sits in the center of Fantasyland.  Mickey’s Philharmagic is an attraction full of intrigue and adventure.  It is loosely based on the most popular scene from Fantasia in which Mickey “borrows” the blue sorcerer hat.  Philharmagic portrays Donald Duck as the sneaky one this time, as the 3D film depicts Donald chasing the hat and taking you with him through some of the most exciting scenes within Disney Animation.

FEATURED BLOGGER OF THE MONTH

The featured blogger of the month of May is Jessica Clawson, also known as Lady_Aurora on Twitter and NDI#21. Jess is an ultimate Disney fan, who writes here about current events. Her life is like a sponge that soaks up everything and anything concerning Disney.

Jess’s first trip to Disney World was in 2002 with her family. They try to visit every other year and make memories each vacation. On her last two trips, Jess was able to meet up with her online friends and do the things she loves in her favorite place ever. Sounds like fun was had by all! On her trip last June with her boyfriend, Chris, she made the most out of her last day. The Magic Kingdom was open until 3 AM that day, so she and Chris spent the whole day there trying to enjoy every attraction they could. At about 2:59 AM, they were on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority and were the only riders. Jess said it felt they were the only people in the park too. “It was completely magical!”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILL JUSTICE!

In 1987, the Disney Legends program was created to recognize those who have created the Disney magic through their imagination, hard work, and incredible talent. Winners embody each of the three elements displayed on the award. The spiral on the award “stands for imagination, the power of an idea.” The hand “holds the gifts of skill, discipline and craftsmanship.” The wand and the star “represent magic:  the spark ignited when imagination and skill combine to create a new dream.”

A REVIEW OF THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE

Where’s the Blue Hat?:  A Review of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Another Disney-Bruckheimer collaboration debuted this past week with the opening of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  The film stars the ever-busy Nicolas Cage who some would argue has chosen quantity over quality as he has starred in nearly 30 films over the last decade.  It is not the first time that he has teamed up with Bruckheimer, as both National Treasure and its sequel were big at the box office.
