Walt Disney World Fantasyland Expansion Soft Opening Preview

On Monday, March 12, Walt Disney World opened the first phase of its highly anticipated Fantasyland expansion with the “Storybook Circus” area in the old Mickey’s Toontown space with Dumbo the flying Elephant ride and the replacement for Goofy’s Barnstormer – a new coaster aptly named The Barnstormer” starring the “Great Goofini.

All these new attractions sport a circus motif and theme. The back story of the new area is that a circus arrived in the newly rehabbed train station along with all the new rides and attractions. If you look on the ground, you will see different animal footprints leading to these new rides. (There are even peanuts embedded in the walkway!) Goofy is now the stuntman for the circus and his new Great Goofini” roller coaster (the track layout is not changed) is totally re-themed in a circus atmosphere reminiscent of the old Carnivals and Circuses of the 1920s. There are many billboards around the new attraction showcasing Goofy’s new “talents.” Many of the props come from the Goofy shorts of the 1950s. Guests will still recognize the old Mickey’s Toontown area, and the Great Goofini attraction has a different entrance and exit queues.

Epcot’s Character Spot

When I take my family to Walt Disney World, meeting the characters is a huge part of our vacation. I’m sure that will change as my children get older, so for now I am relishing it! Having a 5, 2 1/2, and 7 month old, I don’t want to have to do a lot of hunting around for characters, and it would be great if they could congregate all in one spot so that you can meet them all at the same time while only having to wait in one line. Oh wait! They do!

Disney Artist: Art Babbitt

Walt Disney had over his lifetime some of the best artistic talent this world had to offer under his studio roof. Artists, Animators, Songwriters, Story men and every other skill imaginable were at his disposal. The core of his army was what he laughingly called his “Nine Old Men” (A reference to the 1937 Supreme Court’s nine Justices). But one animator had the distinction of two major roles in the Disney Company- Art Babbitt. Art is known as the creator of the character “Goofy”, he established his demeanor and personality and the basics of the character. But on the darker side, he was the main spearhead in the infamous Disney Animators strike of 1941.

He was born Arthur Harold Babitsky on October 8th, 1907 in Omaha Nebraska, in the “Little Bohemia” neighborhood known for its large concentration of Czech immigrants. His parents, Solomon and Zelda were married in their native Russia in 1898.  After Kindergarten his family moved to Sioux City Iowa, and after several more family moves, the family re-located to Brighton Beach in Brooklyn New York. It was then when Art was in his teens that he began to draw and animate, and found that he had a natural talent for it, and used this as a means for extra income. Art put himself through pre-med school at Columbia College, but the dreams of becoming a doctor vanished when he first saw the Walt Disney Silly Symphony the “Skeleton Dance” in 1929. Babbitt was a lover of classical music, which was in many of the Symphonies, and he decided to become an animator.

PAINTING AND LEARNING WITH WATER

Have you ever walked down Main Street USA and an idea popped into your head? This happened to me during a trip to Walt Disney World in May 2009. While walking out of the Main Street Bakery, we saw a Cast Member “painting” something in the street. We did a double take and captured the image above. Although not in a classroom right now, the teacher in me is constantly churning lesson plans in my head.

GETTING GOOFY IN THE CLASSROOM

This semester, I have the privilege of teaching a class called Recreational Activities to Physical Education majors at the college where I work. Recreational Activities involves learning about different sports and activities that can be integrated into community or organizational programs for the betterment of health and mind. It can be a pretty mundane class as we go through rules, regulations, equipment and strategy of the game.

TWIDDLING THUMBS ON THE WAY TO MEET TWEEDLE-DUM

With all the necessary preparations complete, the week before a Disney trip can be rather torturous.  A NDM finds she has already done everything that can be done beforehand to ensure vacation perfection, and there is nothing left except waiting for the remaining time to pass.  This psychotic crawling of time can make a NDM madder than a hatter.
