Which Way To Wonderland?

I stare out the window of the minivan and watch as the I-4 signs indicate we are getting closer to Walt Disney World.  Normally, this is a trek that makes me really happy, but tonight it is quite the opposite.  “I’m a little bit nervous, and I sort of don’t want to go,” I confess to Jackie, my fellow NDM and escort for the evening.  “Why?  We are going to have so much fun,” Jackie assures me, “It’s a social media event.  That is what you are all about. There is no way that we aren’t going to have the best time ever!”  “It’s been so long, Jackie,” I lament. “I am really out of the loop since inner mouse went on hiatus and I started working.  Maybe I’m a ‘has been’ at this point.  I don’t even really know how I should handle myself at this thing.  I just feel incredibly awkward.”

SURPRISINGLY SCARY ATTRACTIONS

My “Tink” has been to Walt Disney World twice now, once for her first birthday and again at 18 months.  Between her need for naps and my pregnancy on the more recent trip, she didn’t ride much so we haven’t yet personally experienced attraction meltdown.

However, I have done some research on this for the future.  Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers (2011) has some great information on attractions that can be too much for little ones.  The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World 2011 (Unofficial Guides) is another good resource for parents.  Arm yourself with some information and you can help keep your trip a positive experience for the whole family.

BOOK CLUB: WE WENT AMONG MAD PEOPLE!

Three fourths of the way through the book now!  I hope you’re enjoying reading it as much as I am. Shall we just dive right in to the past week’s reading?

We’ve finally found the Mad Hatter and March Hare in chapter seven.  (And don’t forget sleepy little Dormouse.)  As Alice invites herself to the tea party, we’re plopped into the middle of chaos.  The hosts and guest quibble over propriety and manners, but through all of that we learn why there is a continual tea party going on.  I was disappointed to find that it wasn’t an Unbirthday party.  I love Unbirthdays.  In fact today is MY Unbirthday!  But apparently Hatter has been punished by Time.  Not some abstract time like we know it, but a person.  Hatter’s stuck at 6 o’clock forever and ever.  Since this is tea time, he’s always going to be having tea.  And now I understand the watch being two days slow.  Since it’s always 6 o’clock, he no longer has hours to contend with so his watch only tells the days.  I loved the playfulness of language in this chapter.  Favorite line: Alice says, “I don’t think—” and Hatter responds, “Then you shouldn’t talk!”  (Does everyone else hear Ed Wynn while reading Hatter’s lines?)  That’s the last straw for Alice, and she leaves in a huff.  As Alice leaves the party, she finds herself back in the long hallway where she began.  This time though, she’s learned how to manage and doesn’t panic.  She remembers to get the key and unlock the door before she nibbles away on the mushroom.  She seems to be starting to get the hang of how Wonderland works.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

For the Disney Film Project podcast recently, I sat down to watch Alice in Wonderland.  I did this knowing full well that I don’t really enjoy the film.  I also knew that our very own NDM #1 counted this as her favorite film.  She was to be a guest on the show and I wanted to put my best foot forward and discuss the film intelligently.

REAL, LIVE NEUROTIC DISNEY MOMS

The mention of my name and tap from behind startles me a little bit.  Mychicagomommy and MomRN are still chatting next to me, and I hadn’t realized anyone else was standing behind me.  Shocked, I slowly turn to face the one that uttered my name.
