DISNEY KITCHEN COLLECTIBLES

So you’ve collected pins, antenna toppers,  and key chains. Your home has lots of Disney characters on your shelves. Some Disney art is on the wall. What’s left? How about adding that special touch to your kitchen? Maybe you cook every day and want to make a meal from your favorite Disney restaurant. Maybe you make some quick snacks and feel like some Mickey waffles now and then. It’s easy to create a Disney kitchen with the collectibles you use.

Go all the way and get everything from your dishes and glasses to a few aprons and dish towels. Add a spatula, measuring spoons, and a Mickey shaped egg ring. For cooking, you can still get Mickey Waffle Makers, a colander, and pasta scooper.

If you want to decorate your kitchen, there’s lots of choices. Go classy, retro, or design by character. Of course, towels, place mats, and cookie jars can do the trick. But what about adding some fun touches? Line an open kitchen shelf with Disney coffee mugs of every shape, size and character. Show off your collection of Disney cookie jars.

DISNEY WORLD JOBS I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE

Imagine a chance encounter with Disney President and Chief Executive Officer, Bob Iger. You tell him you are a Neurotic Disney Person, and he nods knowingly which, in and of itself, is pretty gratifying. You get along very well, and at the end of your surprisingly pleasant encounter he offers you a job—any job your heart desires—at Walt Disney World. Salary, qualifications and career considerations aside, what is your response?

TESTING YOUR METTLE

Previously I have written about my first race experiences here.  Since then, I have gotten another three Disney 5Ks under my belt.  I would like to talk about the most recent of these experiences, the Champion® 5K at Dick’s Sporting Goods Presents ESPN The Weekend (ESPN 5K for short).  The race was held the first Saturday in March, only a week after my previous race, during the Princess Half Marathon Weekend.  Read about our own NDH #19 Todd Perlmutter’s recap of that race on the Touring Plans blog here.

FASTPASSING THE MOUSE

Starting this spring, guests will be able to schedule a time to meet with Mickey Mouse. No, you don’t call his secretary to schedule an appointment, but you actually use a system that many guests are familiar with, the FASTPASS.

Now that Mickey’s Toontown Fair is a thing of the past, guests were not sure where they would be able to catch their favorite mouse for photo opportunities.  As seen on Disney Parks Blog, Mickey will be available to guests in the Town Square Theater, a sight that is currently being revamped for the addition.  Guests will be able to wait in an interactive queue to see Mickey or, if so desired, you can pick up a FASTPASS.  When your window of time arrives, just march on in and see the big cheese himself! This is the first time that Disney has used the FASTPASS system for character interactions.

DISNEY PRESSED PENNIES FOR FUN

Collecting Disney pressed pennies is just plain fun. Pressed Pennies are not only a souvenir but an activity for you, your family, and your friends while you’re at the Disney resort  or at any of the Disney parks,  hotels, shops or other areas. Finding the pressed penny machines is just part of the excitement!  Collecting the pennies, knowing which ones you have and still need, is the other part.

These souvenirs only cost 51 cents – the penny to be pressed and 50 cents to have it done. There are also pressed quarters that cost $1.25. Those machines are more difficult to find because there are fewer of them.  One of the things that makes collecting pressed pennies so much fun is that you can never finish collecting them all. Disney changes the types of pennies offered in the machines and changes out machines too. They also have Celebrations when new pennies are released for a short time.

MICKEY’S BACKYARD BARBEQUE DINNER SHOW

This week, I finish out our discussions of the Dinner Shows.  As you may recall, in the previous weeks, I have discussed the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue Dinner Show and the Spirit of Aloha Luau Dinner Show.  These shows are located at Fort Wilderness and the Polynesian Resort, respectively.

DISNEY DREAM CRUISE… PART 2

In the first installment of the Disney Dream preview Cruise, we spoke of the new “Let the Memories Begin” campaign. We also previewed the Fantasyland Expansion and its new attractions. The new Castle Light Show, “The Magic, The Memories and You!” was presented for the media. All of this led up to the preview cruise of the new Disney Dream, the newest addition to the Disney Cruise Line fleet.  Now we will explore the ship itself and see all the new magic and innovations that guests will experience aboard this luxury Ship. Let’s talk about my favorite part of the cruise: the restaurants!

Food has always been an important element of any cruise line, and Disney’s cuisine is world famous. The growing trends are “Specialty Restaurants” that are developed by celebrity and world renowned chefs to offer guests upscale dining experiences. On the new Dream, Disney had upped the ante with an opulent new restaurant…Remy’s. The French inspired menu was created by two award-winning chef:  Arnaud Lallement from Reims France and Scott Hunnel, direct from Disney’s Victoria and Albert’s. The décor is stunning with fantastic views of the ocean, and the menu blends classic and contemporary cooking styles in an elegant setting a la Victoria and Albert’s. There is a private Chef’s table named Chez Gusteau from the restaurant in the movie “Ratatouille,” and the décor is modeled after that fictional eatery.  This elegant room has a private entrance as well as an entrance to the kitchen so the chefs can enter easily. Some of the offerings here include classic French smoked bison with fennel salad, Pigeon pie, and foie gras. Decadent French desserts like a dark chocolate praline with cocoa sherbet are served along with French press coffee and grand crème.  And, like Victoria and Albert’s you will dine on eight to nine small courses in a slow, leisurely fashion. Dress codes for men? Dress jacket (tie optional), pants and shoes. And for ladies? Pant suits, evening dresses, or cocktail dresses.   The cost of dining at this restaurant for those eighteen and older is $75.00 in addition to wine and alcoholic drinks.

WALT DISNEY WORLD RAILROAD

When you enter the Magic Kingdom in any of the hallowed Walt Disney parks worldwide, the very first thing you will see is the “Main St. Station,” the starting point for the Walt Disney World Railroad. This beautiful and detailed train is strictly American and is the anchor of Main Street, USA. Nothing quite says “small town America” like a huffing, puffing, whistle-blowing steam train pulling into the station! Here, you can get on and travel back to a time when train travel was more romantic and soul-soothing, and, yes, more civilized than any high-speed metro liner of today. There is something about the chuffing and clanging of that engine and the whistling blowing its mournful cry that cannot be duplicated today in any form of modern travel. But how did Walt Disney decide to use this treasure of transportation nostalgia in his theme parks? For the answer, we must travel back to Walt’s childhood, in Marceline, Missouri, circa 1906.

DISNEY ADDICT? COME SIT NEXT TO ME.

I was watching a film by a former Disney star, who has been fodder for tabloids lately, before going to bed last night.  She admitted to being obsessed with a classmate and said, “I spent 80% of my time talking about <a person> and the other 20% of the time hoping someone else brings her up.”

I realized that for the last few months, I have been not only hoping people will bring up Disney, but I prompt them, with what we call in special education, “non-verbal cues.”  Wearing Crocs into a preschool classroom is reasonable, but mine are black, and have Mickey heads for holes. I carry a wristlet, which I purchased on my last trip with much restraint in a sea of Dooney and Bourke bags, because it was more practical for everyday use, and I wanted to use it EVERYDAY.

MICKEY TALKS!

Characters inside the parks are always there to take pictures with guests, having the perfect smile every time-perfect smile of course because their faces are frozen in a way.  This is no longer so with a new Mickey that debuted last week in Disneyland! And the biggest surprise of all – Mickey talks!

In the last few years, characters with moving mouths and blinking eyes have been seen mainly in stage shows.  This Mickey seems to use the same technology, but with the added feature of talking!  The talking is not just recorded speeches like what is seen in parades, shows, and the park openings, this is an interactive talk, using the names of the people he is meeting just as Crush does in Turtle Talk with Crush in Epcot!
