THINGS MY CHILDREN MUST HAVE ON THEIR DISNEY VACATIONS PART 2

Here is the second half of the Disney Dozen for things my children must have on their Disney vacations!

#7. Clothing! This might not be something your children are attached to, but wearing the correct clothing while touring the parks in red hot heat is paramount to your Disney survival! We dress in as little clothing as possible! When purchasing summer clothes for my kids I always have our Disney trip in mind, and try to purchase shorts and sleeveless shirts made with very light weight material. I also make it a point to gather Mickey shirts and the like from places like Target.

THE BARE NECESSITIES

As a working mom, I often feel guilty about not staying home with my boys or being there when they get off the bus.  I miss being the parent to take them to after-school practices, or in Reagan’s case, therapies.  As hard as it is, I know that I am doing what I have to do to provide for my family.  I’m blessed with a good job and a great boss who lets me have the time I need to go to their school functions, doctor’s appointments, and yes – Disney World!

But guilt has often found me trying to make up for not always being there, and I find myself giving them material things or overdoing the simple things.  For example, I plan over-the-top birthday parties for them – you know the kind – where you take care of every minute detail and elaborate decorations, only to see them having more fun playing tag.  Or buying them an awesome Hot Wheels track with loops, bells, and whistles, only to see them pulling the wrapping paper tube out of the trash and using it for a tunnel.  (By the way, cardboard tubes also make cool swords that make a great sound without the pain when you whack your opponent.)

SEPTEMBER LOVE AFFAIR

September, in my mind, is synonymous with the end of summer and the beginning of school. Consequently, I grew up almost hating September. It was the month-that-must-not-be-named.  My attitude changed somewhat after I got into college, as I started looking forward to September as the time by which I’d be back at school. My love affair with September came along soon after college when I was married. I discovered that September is a great time to go to Disney World! Low crowd levels and still summer (to my NJ mind) weather, lower resort rates, and decent park hours translates to a great value for my money.

SNIFFLE, SNEEZE, & SICK

You’re going to Disney World and you’ve gone to great lengths to plan out your vacation including your transportation, resort, what to pack, dining, and the parks. So, you think you have all bases covered, but do you? The one thing I have found Disney guests will often overlook in the trip planning process are ways to minimize getting sick.

Sure, guests bring along all sorts of medicine in case they get sick such as cold and allergy medication, pain relievers, and fever reducers like Tylenol, Advil, cough syrup, nasal spray, and antacids. Other common items guests frequently bring are bandages, blister treatments, and hand sanitizer. It’s great to have all these items just in case, but it’s even better if you don’t have to use them.

If commando style is your idea of touring the parks (that is to get there at rope drop and continue going non-stop until a cast member kicks you out at closing), then you may very well make good use of the medicine you’ve brought with you. I don’t care how young or old you are.  Continuous touring of the parks with few if any breaks will eventually take its toll. Yes, Disney World is absolutely the most magical place on earth, but it can be both physically and mentally exhausting.

Something else to keep in mind is everyone moves at their own speed (some faster than others), so it’s important to allow time for everyone to adjust to a pace you are all going to be comfortable with. If you’re vacationing with young children, plan on making several bathroom stops. Also, no matter how you decide to tour the parks, it is very important that everyone stay hydrated by drinking plenty of liquids.

The average family vacation is usually a week–give or take a few days–which makes managing your time essential. One way to make the most of your Disney vacation is to carefully research and prioritize what’s important for you and your family to accomplish during your stay while knowing it is virtually impossible to see and do everything in one trip.

I know there are people who don’t go to Disney very often who will try to conquer the World, but there is a very apropos saying . . . “less is more.” There is so much detail and story throughout the parks that is missed by hurrying from attraction to attraction. The people who rush around in a frenzy have also burdened themselves with undue stress and are more likely to wind up getting sick, thus missing some of the very attractions they couldn’t wait to see.

Most people will recognize when they are not physically well, judging by their body’s aches and pains. Yet, many don’t see the signs when they are mentally exhausted. The next time you go to Disney World try observing the behavior of others. Generally, you’ll find relatively normal parent and child behavior in the morning hours, but by the evening you’ll see some kids and even more parents having tantrums. There is an easy solution. If you don’t want to be “that parent” or your child “that kid.” Give yourselves a break from the parks in the afternoon. A great place to unwind is your resort, either in your room or by the pool. It’s an excellent way to rejuvenate yourself and a way to minimize your chances of getting sick on the vacation.

A benefit of staying on property is Extra Magic Hours which rewards Disney resort guests with added time in the parks. The additional park time creates an opportunity for on-property guests to escape the heat and crowds during the heart of the day as well as a chance to rest and relax before returning for a nighttime of fun and excitement.

If you have a Disney World vacation planned, it might be a good idea to build up your stamina before hand. My wife and I have started taking long walks to prepare ourselves. However, nothing can prepare you for the heat in Animal Kingdom which may just be the hottest place on the face of the earth.

Traveling to Disney World with young children usually means character meet and greets, ice cream, and playgrounds. It also means exposure to other young children who sometimes come fully equipped with colds and coughs ready to spread to your child. When our kids were young we would bring lots of wet wipes to Disney constantly using them to clean their hands and face. They were especially useful for my daughter who had her hands on anything within reach.

Whenever your next trip happens to be, please promise to pay attention to how you feel both physically and mentally but more importantly pay attention and listen very carefully to how other members of your family feel, especially your children.

Hoping your next trip to Disney World is your best vacation ever!

TWO-PIECE OR NOT TWO-PIECE

This time of year is always overwhelming for our family.  Joel works steadily around the clock at his office to meet pressing deadlines.  This leaves me to solely manage the affairs of our home and children.   Therefore, I am always on the brink of insanity, but these past seven days have been unusually stressful.

Last week I quit my job due to a precarious situation that was worsening in nature daily.  Since then I have been tense as I search for a new source of income to pay for our Disney Vacation Club membership.   Our failing economy hasn’t done much for my job search or my nerves with the “doom and gloom” that is now a regular part of the news, but this is not the full extent of my recent anxiety.

GETTING THERE CAN BE LESS THAN HALF THE FUN

My husband has been asking me to write about what happens when things go wrong on a trip to Disney. Just as I like to cover my head with a blanket if I am forced to go off-property during a vacation, I generally choose to discuss more pleasant things than little speed bumps along International Drive.

SURVIVAL OF THE MOST NEUROTIC

There are some days when being a family member of a Neurotic Disney Person (NDP) is all about survival.  This is especially true when the individual is a parent and the primary caretaker.  The reason is because when important Disney events take place, the individual’s neurosis consumes the mind temporarily and often interferes with the person’s capacity to function in routine daily activities. Today would be one of those days.

BOARDWALK BLUNDERS

different_is_greatBOARDWALK BLUNDERS

The mission is this: Get out the door with my family and arrive at Disney’s Boardwalk Area looking absolutely fabulous as I stroll in leisure. The challenge is this: Grammy has “gifted” me with two abhorrent, knock-off, Disney t-shirts that she bought in a thrift store and expects me to wear one. The strategy is this: Appear so busy that I don’t have time to change (allowing me to remain in my very cute, grey, tailored, Mickey Mouse ringer tee that I am already in).

CLOTHES THAT DON’T MAKE THE MAN

The introduction to the twins has been a little rough.  Angel, my precocious niece, has developed a way to look down her nose at people who aren’t “acceptable” even if they stand three and a half feet above her.  Unfortunately, I have discovered that I am amongst the “unacceptable.”  This would not normally be so disheartening considering that we only just met, but DH—who is drastically less interested in procuring the affections of munchkin snobs—has immediately secured a place in her clique.

OUR KEY WEST KINGDOM

OUR KEY WEST KINDGOM

As we pull into our parking space, I look upon some of the most inviting condos I have ever laid eyes on.  Surrounded by tropical palm trees and lush shrubbery, three stories of pastel-painted units sit behind a section of white picket fence and a pleasant bench area.  I can hardly wait to find out which unit is ours.

LIVING THE NIGHTMARE

LIVING THE NIGHTMARE

For a week and a half I have succeeded in keeping our check-in day a secret from my little Disney investigators.  It was not easy, but I cleverly avoided pointed questions from them by appearing momentarily preoccupied and unable to answer.  Surprisingly, Grammy did not become an obstacle either.  She did not make any attempts to foil my plans by revealing our arrival date to my mouseketeers, and—as far as I know—she did not discuss the trip at all with them.  This made it quite easy to pack and prepare for our vacation under the guise of “visiting Pop-Pop and B-Mom”.

TWIDDLING THUMBS ON THE WAY TO MEET TWEEDLE-DUM

With all the necessary preparations complete, the week before a Disney trip can be rather torturous.  A NDM finds she has already done everything that can be done beforehand to ensure vacation perfection, and there is nothing left except waiting for the remaining time to pass.  This psychotic crawling of time can make a NDM madder than a hatter.

MOUSE TRIPPING

ready-to-go

MOUSE TRIPPING

There has been some speculation about the origins of the title, Neurotic Disney Mom.  While not certain, it could be argued that the term was born out of a noticeable change in the behavior of maternal Disneyphiles the week before a Disney vacation.  The members of a NDM’s family often consider her heightened sense of neurosis during this time to be irrational.  Thrown into the mysterious category of conditions caused by lunar pulls and pre-menstrual cycles, vacation partners believe that the sudden onset of strange patterns emerging from a NDM are an inexplicable biochemical reaction that results from the anticipated return to her homeland.

THE QUEST FOR THE PERFECT PANCAKE

pancakes2

Recently, I found a pancake recipe that uses almond flour rather than the digestively forbidden wheat flour.  It spurred me into action.  Finding an organic, raw almond distributor online, I ordered these savory nuts in bulk and patiently waited for their arrival.  The delivery was made a couple days ago.  Since then, I have been looking for a day that affords the time I need to test the new recipe.  Perhaps today is that day.

ON THE JOB TRAINING

ON THE JOB TRAINING

The basic itinerary for our week has been set.  The few dining reservations that we needed have been made.  It is time for the task that all NDMs live for – designing a strategy for conquering the theme park.

I gather my three mouseketeers into our living room.  As a NDM, one of the responsibilities I hold is to teach my children the various facets of living The Disney Driven Life.  Among these, vacation planning is paramount, and this is a perfect opportunity to begin instruction in this crucial life-skill.

SAINT PATRICK

a-pura-cocina

I sit at my computer to check the park hours of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While I’m notating particulars about Extra Magic Hours for Disney resort guests, a pop-up box notifies me that I have received an e-mail from someone named Chef Patrick.

I open the letter to read a thoughtful note from the chef of The Hollywood Brown Derby.  He explains that he was contacted by Brenda about our family’s circumstances and is very interested in enabling us to visit the park.  He then requests an e-mail back specifying the items that my children cannot eat.

A MORSEL THAT’S HARD TO SWALLOW

sad-silhouette

It is decided that we will only spend one day in a theme park during our upcoming trip.  Although I have been doing my best to not allow my newly acquired Disney phobia to get the best of me, it has been hard for me to entirely shake it.  Traveling with our special dietary needs is a concept that still makes me very uneasy, so I decide not to set our expectations too high.  We will brave one park for one day, and we will remain content within that limitation.

THE MORNING AFTER

wondering

The world is coming to an end.  That must be it.  There is no other reason to explain the strange feeling that has suddenly overcome me.  I am afraid to go to Walt Disney World.  Surely it is a sign of the apocalypse.

Now that all my weeks of hyper-focused energy have landed us a stay at Disney’s Old Key West Resort, I am paralyzed by the thought of actually going.  This happening is absolutely bizarre, but there is some method to my madness.

GRAMMY’S A “GO”

GRAMMY’S A “GO”

Grammy is my mother who lives in South Florida where I was raised.  She and I have a long, difficult history.  While I am a Neurotic Disney Mom (NDM), Grammy is just a Neurotic Mom (NM).  It is the “Disney” element that makes one’s neurosis an endearing quality rather than an unbearable one.  For this reason, NDMs and NMs are worlds apart and often clash.
