D23 Expo Overview

This year’s D23 Expo came to a close Sunday night rather quietly, much like the entire, relatively uneventful weekend.

Friday opened with the Disney Legends Ceremony and big cheers from the Disney fans.  A big highlight was the voice of the princesses singing songs from their movies.

Friday afternoon was much less well received as there was no large announcements at the Parks and Resorts presentation as many expected.  Among the discussed topics were the Fantasyland Expansion, Aulani, Carsland, Tangled coming to Disneyland’s Fantasyland and the Snow White Mine Train coaster being built in Fantasyland. Fans were furious because they expected big news just as was announced two years ago, but due to the economy and number of projects Disney already has under way, this lack of announcements comes as no surprise for some.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR HOTEL ROOM AS ORGANIZED AS THE REST OF YOUR VACATION PART 2

Here is the second half of your Disney Dozen for how to keep your hotel room as organized as the rest of your vacation!

#7.  A place for shoes! If your family is like mine, they will saunter into the hotel room mid-afternoon ready for a nap and kick their shoes off to only Mickey knows where. Then, when we are ready to hit the parks in a couple of hours, no one will be able to find them, and they’ll probably blame it on their dear old NDM. Have a designated spot for shoes! For us it is the area underneath the vanity, but it can be anywhere that is convenient and out of the way for you!

HIDDEN TREASURE

The scene is poignant.  An older man, a hard worker, in a room lit by candlelight, gently snuggled with a small cat, kneels down and looks toward heaven.   He desires something created, something that embodies love, something real.  The Blue Fairy, in all her wisdom, flies down and proclaims that his own wooden puppet would become a real boy once he embraced certain valuable human characteristics: to be a good boy.  She also mentions truth.

THE FROSTING OF DISNEY ON MY BIRTHDAY CUPCAKE

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday. Birthdays are my favorite days. It doesn’t even have to be my birthday. I love celebrating people’s birthdays with them, even if I don’t know them very well or even at all. A simple smile, wishes for a wonderful birthday, and birthday small talk are all things that I love to share with people.  We didn’t do anything extremely special, just a small family gathering with gluten free cupcakes and ice cream. That’s how I like it. It’s a rare occasion when we can have all of our family together. However, that day I received a beautiful, deeply personal, and useful gift.
That morning I felt like Tigger! I came out of my room feeling beautiful and there were my two amazing parents, frosting cupcakes for our family party that evening. The cupcakes had been arranged like flowers, one lemon frosted cupcake in the center and strawberry or chocolate frosted cupcakes around it for petals. I looked around the house and it had been turned into a Tangled wonderland! For those of you who don’t know me, Rapunzel is my favorite princess (along with Belle) for various reasons, which is a topic for another post.
After they sang happy birthday and we hugged, my mom asked me if I wanted to open my present that morning or if I wanted to wait for that night. I couldn’t wait. I had to open it! Mom went off to find it and I waited anxiously. She couldn’t find it. I was a little sad, but I knew it would turn up somewhere. She kept looking for a few minutes and she finally found it. I wasn’t surprised at all when she came walking out of the den holding a bag with the princesses on it. I can’t remember a birthday where the princesses weren’t a part of the festivities. I squealed in my head, or maybe it was out loud. I can only remember how overjoyed I was. Then I began to open the present.  What was inside the bag surprised me. It looked like a glasses case. I opened it up and screamed! Inside was a Tangled watch. The band was a lovely lilac color. I immediately noticed that Rapunzel was on the face in a forest and Hannah was written right above her head. The bezel even had sparkly crystals on it! I wasn’t going to wear it to school because I didn’t want anything to happen before I wore it that night, so I turned to hand it back to my mom.
“Look on the back,” she nudged me sweetly. I turned it over and on the back was inscribed Happy Birthday! It was beautiful, but what made me happiest was how personal it was. It was an innocent princess watch, but still very appropriate for a teen or an adult. It sounds really cliché, but it’s true, so forgive me when I say that my parents are my best friends. I love them so much and I’m incredibly blessed to have them in my life.  Disney is a place, but it is also a state of mind. With the frosting of Disney on my birthday cupcake I was able to be “at Disney” without leaving home. I had a magical, memorable, fabulous, pixie-dusted, the-adjectives-could-go-on-forever, birthday, and I wish all the same to you and yours.

ROMANTIC NOOKS AND CRANNIES AROUND THE MAGIC KINGDOM

One of my all time favorite pastimes while visiting the Walt Disney World Resort is to amble around slowly, taking in all that satiating attention to the finer points.  From the music, just loud enough to fill your subconscious with pleasantries, to the subtly jovial colors, mature foliage and precise architectural details, all properties within Disney World are a feast for the senses!  Some even have their own aromas!  Goodness, what I wouldn’t do to bottle that crisp, Polynesian fragrance!

ROMANCE + DISNEY = WOOZY WOBBLY GIDDINESS

I am fresh from a dreamy weekend In Disney World with my hubby.  We stayed in the lush, Pacific Northwest Wilderness Lodge, dined at Citricos dressed to the nines and strolled through parks slowly…watching, talking and seeing shows.  It was a short weekend escape, but it was truly an escape.  This weekend is a memory I will hold dear forever.  Now that I am home again, I have begun thinking about our next romantic weekend away.  I’m not sure when that will be, but you know, it’s good to be prepared.

MAMAS DON’T LET YOUR BABIES GROW UP TO BE HANNAH MONTANA

Copyright: Disney

Those of you that have daughters may have noticed something – little girls are in quite a hurry to grow up. The very phrase “grown-up” or “big-girl” can motivate even the most stubborn little girl into action.  Once they’re potty trained and sleeping in their big girl bed, we stop wanting them to be bigger; but they keep on wanting to be more grown up.  It was when I volunteered to help out in my daughter’s first grade class that I noticed a problem. All the little six year old girls had lunch boxes, folders, pencils, t-shirts, etc. with characters on them.  You might be picturing Princesses, Fairies, Winnie the Pooh, Teddy Bears, and rainbows. That’s what I would have thought. Instead I saw Hannah Montana, Justin Beiber, iCarly, and, yes, Twilight. There is something very wrong with seeing a six year old wearing “I heart Vampires” on her chest. I don’t want to step on any toes, but are we letting these sweet little girls grow up a tad too fast?

EVERYTHING I NEED TO KNOW IN LIFE I LEARNED FROM DISNEY

In case you haven’t noticed, life is pretty complicated these days. It goes by fast, making us run after it, trying desperately to keep up. We turn to the experts for help, who tell us to simplify, de-clutter, refocus, spend quality time, look at the big picture, thin down, shape up, get outside, spend more, save more, read more, BE more.  And despite all our best efforts, we end up drowning in the well meaning advice of those trying to help us.

UNTANGLING TANGLED

After Disney’s brief return to “classic” animation with The Princess and the Frog, they have again returned to their roots with their latest fairy-tale production, Tangled.  It has been a while since Disney has revamped a non-original story for an animated feature film (correct me if I am wrong, but the last one was either Treasure Planet or Tarzan depending on your definition of original).  While this film may not become the Disney-defining classic like many of the others in the princess genre, it is a fun family film and one worth seeing for any Disney fan.

TANGLED

I can identify the exact moment in the movie when I saw Tangled go from a very good movie to a great one. It was right around the time my wife took my daughter to the potty. No, seriously, there was one moment where I said, “Wow.”

If you’ve seen the movie already, you can probably identify it. When Rapunzel and Flynn Rider are sitting in the lake surrounding the kingdom waiting for the moment she’s been looking forward to her whole life, it happens—not what you expect, which is the moment to occur and transform her life. No, Rapunzel admits that she is both excited and terrified to finally achieve her lifelong dream.

MAGIC KINGDOM CHANGES

Late last week, the Disney Parks Blog posted about a couple changes being made to Magic Kingdom in the near future. There were two things announced and it’s one of those something old and something new situations

First change is the something old; it is old news that “it’s a small world” is under refurbishment now until October 22nd. The announced changes include bringing back the old style of queue that the attraction had prior to the 2004-2005 refurbishment.  The Imagineers have said that there are no plans during this refurbishment to put Disney characters in the attraction, as seen in other Disney parks.
