I wasn’t sure what to think when I heard about the movie Secretariat. The movie wasn’t highly marketed, which I now believe was a mistake by Disney. My mom called me one afternoon and said that she and my dad had gone to see it and loved it. That still didn’t really motivate me to run to the theater. No pun intended. I knew that I would catch it on DVD at some point. As soon as I saw that Netflix had it in their system, I put it at the top of my queue, receiving it the day that it was released on video.

It’s funny that I am the sports and pets blogger for The Disney Driven Life blog. Secretariat fits so well into both categories. While not many people can actually compete in horse racing, jockeying a horse is not to be taken lightly by any means. To control an animal that big, moving at ridiculously fast speeds is incredible. Hats off to you…. Big, massive Kentucky Derby hats off to you, jockeys!

I truly believe that most owners probably don’t have the connection that Penny had with Secretariat. It’s like he could read her mind. I’m convinced that sometimes animals just know what you need. Secretariat knew what Penny Tweedy needed.

Sometimes in the morning, my dog Lucy will hop up in the bed while I’m still sleeping and come nuzzle up right next to me. It makes your heart melt a little. It reminds me why I have her and why I love her so much. This movie made me want to give Lucy a little more attention than normal. Sometimes with all the hustle and bustle you forget how much animals can bring to your life. For Penny Tweedy, Big Red did just that. Red was a connection to her mother and father. While they could not be there, Big Red filled a void that kept them alive for Penny.

I don’t want to spoil this for the people that haven’t seen the movie. Most of you know how it ends. But the emotions that you will feel are truly “Disney unique.” You know, the kind you feel when you watch that commercial where the mom and dad tell the kids they are getting on a plane in like 2 hours and going to Walt Disney World. You want to cry your eyes out, but you just kind of shiver and tear up instead.

All I can say is see this movie! Rent it. Buy it. See it! It is uplifting, heart-warming and an all-around wonderful story. In true Disney fashion, you won’t be disappointed.
