On August 22, 1929, Walt Disney Productions released the first of new line of cartoon shorts called Silly Symphonies. The Skeleton Dance, was about four skeletons dancing & making music around a graveyard. Directed by Walt Disney and animated by Ub Iwerks, this short was voted #18 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time in 1994.
The Skeleton Dance & the Skeletons have been featured in many modern day productions as well. You may have seen them in one of the following-
- “Grim Grinning Ghosts” segment of Disney Sing-A-Long videos
- the LucasArts game, Monkey Island II
- Disney’s House of Mouse
- As a bonus feature in Epic Mickey 2
- a deleted scene in Hotel Transylvania
Notably, Silly Symphonies is known for the use of Walt Disney Studio’s multiplane motion picture camera, the introduction of Donald Duck(1934) and Technicolor(1935). Silly Symphonies ran from 1929-1939 and produced 75 cartoon shorts.
