As part of our “A Month of Thanks” celebration, we asked our readers and contributors to share their stories about why they are thankful for Disney. Here is just one of those submitted. If you would like to share why you are thankful for Disney, please see this article or contact Maria (NDM 130)
Ah, Thanksgiving! The smell of turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie….but wait! Living here in Canada, we celebrated our Thanksgiving last month! That’s right, we Canadians celebrate our Thanksgiving in October which means we have a long stretch from then until Christmas. But just because our meal is over and the family has gone home doesn’t mean that I can’t spend November celebrating the things I am thankful for though. In fact, I have decided to spend this month thinking of one new thing each day that I am thankful for.
This idea is not new. Many people do a daily gratitude, and in fact, this idea is not new to me. This past weekend I spent some time doing some Fall cleaning and I decided to tackle the book case in our Rec Room. This is the place where old books, pamphlets, programs from plays and school projects go when no one knows what to do with them. It was during my purging of papers that I came across a daily journal I had when I was 24….way back in 1994. I was 6 months married to my Hubby, and I had titled my journal “My Not So Daily Affirmation…Things to be Happy For”. The first page was dated February 11, 1994. My list reads as follows…
1. My Hubby
2. My Job
3. My Gram
4. That I can read
5. Lucy Maud Montgomery (the author of “Anne of Green Gables”)
6. Walt Disney
7. Sleeping in
8. Morning Glory Muffins
9. Florida
10. Warm quilts
After reading my list, I looked to see what I wrote on the following days. The rest of the journal is blank, which is kind of sad. I wonder what kept me so busy that I didn’t keep up with my list of Thankfulness. I am also amazed that the things on that first list still are things I am thankful today! Of course, today I would also add my 2 kids to the list, but truly these things still make me happy. I think there are still a great number of things to add to my list though, so I am going to focus this November on adding to my journal with new things that make me happy. Each day I hope to write a new list, and hopefully in another 21 years when I get around to cleaning off my book case again I will find a book full of Thanks.
