**Disclosure – I received these books for review purposes from the Disney Book Group. All opinions are my own.
Story time is always a favorite in this Neurotic Disney home. NDK (Neurotic Disney Kid) is old enough to read, but not too old to still be read to! Books are wonderful on so many levels. We keep them everywhere – even in the car! Disney Books are a great way to keep Disney at home. Disney Book Group was kind enough to send these books for NDK approval – be sure to look for the NDK Review after the description of each book!
Happy back-to-school! Labor Day is over, and school has officially started in just about every region I know, which can only mean one thing – more reading logs to fill out! Disney Books always seem to make that task easy! In this edition of Story Time Favorites, I have four wonderful books, all of which fit the Super Hero theme in one way or another, perfect for preschool and elementary age children. These books are available in stores and online now.
This adorable new board book tells a rhyming tale, perfect for little ones! Our first experience with this story was with our local library featuring local heroes at a story time. Our fire department came in to visit the children and read this story to them. One of the most important things they said was that children should be taught that firefighters are not scary, even though all of their equipment may make them appear that way. Teach a child to run towards a firefighter, not away. The story follows a fire department as they rush to put out a fire and save the day! This book would be perfect for National Fire Prevention Month in October!
From the back of the book:
The fire alarm sounds! The firefighter responds. He jumps in the fire truck and races to a daring rescue!
The NDK Review: This is a great book for little kids. It explains about what firefighters do. They talk about firefighters heroes. Firefighters are heroes because they rescue people. I am happy they made a book about firefighters being heroes for little kids!
- World of Reading: Battle with Ultron (Avengers)
- Page Count: 32 * Price: $3.99
- World of Reading Level 2
I love World of Reading books. A book with simple story lines, compound sentences and contractions is a Super-Hero book to me. But to a new reader, the colorful, fun pictures with a story full of characters that they know is Super-Hero for them! Throw the Avengers into the mix, and there is a win-win situation. In this story, we learn how these Super-Heroes become Avengers!
From the back of the book:
Iron Man must gather a new team of Avengers to save his friends, Captain America, Thor and Hulk from the evil robot, Ultron. He meets Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch, Quicksilver, Falcon and Vision. This new band of heroes must defeat Ultron.
The NDK Review: This book wasn’t as exciting as the other Avengers books I have read. The pictures are cool. The sentences are simple. I really think that the movie is different than this book. The story does show that you have to work together as a team in order to win. I like that.
Doc McStuffins is a super hero of her own. A true savior for toys all over the world, Doc’s main mission is to “fix them up.” In the newest series of Doc McStuffins: Pet Vet, the show worked closely with the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) and Solid Gold Holistic Pet Food and Nationwide and focused on how to care for your pets.
From the publisher:
Donny’s new toy dog, Fetchin’ Findo, stops doing what he does best: fetching! Can Doc the vet find out what’s wrong with the little pup? This pet-tastic story is based on a special Pet Vet episode and includes lots of fun stickers!
The NDK Review: I like the Pet Vet series of Doc McStuffins. In this story, Donny’s toy dog stops finding his bone. Doc takes it to the clinic and tries to help. Doc teaches how to take care of your pets – real or toy! There are “Doc’s Tips for Caring for Pets” in the back of the book. It’s a great reminder to have.
In a classic retelling of “Aladdin,” this read-along story features a CD with character voices and sounds from the movie. These read-along stories always remind me of my childhood. It’s always fun to hear sound effects as you read along with this book. I love the twinkling, magic dust sounds when it is time to turn the page, keeping the magic alive!
From the publisher:
Aladdin’s classic tale comes to life! Follow along as the young hero finds the Genie’s lamp, wins the heart of Princess Jasmine, and defeats the evil sorcerer, Jafar. Real character voices and thrilling sound effects add to the magic in this exciting storybook-and-CD set.
The NDK Review: The voices really sounded just like the characters from the movie! The story is almost the same as the movie. I really enjoyed it. My favorite part was when Aladdin tricks Jafar. I really like to read these stories, but the CD always has music or sound effects, which makes it fun!
- Sofia the First: Let the Good Times Troll
- Page Count: 32 * Price: $9.99
- Hardcover * Includes 22 minute episode DVD
Sofia the First has always been a favorite of ours. In this story, the importance of not making assumptions is explored; both sides of the story is always important. The book is a beautiful hard cover, with a plastic sleeve for the DVD attached to the inside front cover. At $9.99, a hardcover story with a full episode DVD is definitely a bargain!
From the publisher:
After Sofia befriends the cute, friendly trolls who live in a cave near the castle, it’s up to her to show King Roland and her family that they shouldn’t judge or fear the trolls without getting to know them first. Read and watch-along with Sofia with this illustrated storybook that includes a DVD of the Sofia the First episode, “Let the Good Times Troll!”
The NDK Review: I remember this episode when it first came on. The story follows the episode. I was surprised that the book had a DVD with it. I originally thought it was a read-along story, but I was so happy to see the Sofia the First theme song! It was just like when I watched it on Disney Junior. Any Sofia fan would like this book and DVD.
