Normally when you watch a superhero movie, it’s easy to know who to cheer for and who needs booing. You know the good guy wins and the bad guys get what’s coming to them, but not in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. For the most part, everyone is a good guy. It’s the heroes you grew up loving and rooting for going at each other’s throats. When you were a child wearing your Spider-Man pajamas reading your comic about Captain America saving the day, you never dreamed there would be a point where they would fight each other. Well, now they are and you have to pick a side.
Captain America: Civil War opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2016, and has been long awaited by Marvel fans. There have been so many rumors floating around for months, it’s interesting to see how many of them came true. In the film, Steve Rogers (Captain America) leads the newly formed team of Avengers. In their pursuit to safeguard humanity, they have yet another incident resulting in collateral damage. The governments of the world get together and set up a governing body to oversee the Avengers. Not all the Avengers are on board with the idea. Some are concerned about not being able to help the people they feel need help. The group splits into two groups; those who sign the agreement and those who don’t. Captain America leads the group to remain free and defend humanity without government oversight. Iron Man (Tony Stark) leads the second group to operate under the UN regulations, forcing the audience to decide who their loyalties are with. Think it’s easy? Audiences will be surprised how many times they change alliances.
I was surprised how fast paced the movie was. Yes, of course, it’s a Marvel superhero film, but normally, I find it has slow moving scenes just stretching out time until they can fit in another fight scene. Captain America: Civil War is non-stop action. I’m not even exaggerating. It really felt like someone was always punching someone else. You can’t help but cheer for both people fighting. You can’t help it because 12 of your favourite heroes are fighting at the same time. It’s the ultimate who-would-beat-who argument ender.
What makes the film great is not the fighting scenes, but they are great. It’s how they portray the superhero’s characters and personality. They aren’t just flat fighting machines, but human beings. Normally, their sense of right and wrong is black and white, but not now. The characters have internal struggles of what to do and who to side with. It makes them really relatable. The film’s actual villain, Zemo, sometimes feels like a second class story line. It’s what ultimately brings the movie to its climax, but in a way viewers would never expect. It’s not the typical and expected “bad guy doing bad things” story line.
There are numerous reviews who will fill you with spoilers before you watch the film. Here at Disney Driven Life, we would never want to ruin the film like that for you. I will say this, if you want to fully understand the movie, you should have seen the previous Marvel movies. It’s important so you can understand who the characters are and get all the references. With that being said, don’t shy away from the film if you haven’t. They give you enough information that you will get the general idea of the film. You can grasp what’s happening, and appreciate it for the fast-paced and entertaining film it is. Also, the movie is funny. I didn’t expect that. There were points where the audience were shaking they were laughing so hard. They also cheered
when their side was winning. You couldn’t help but get wrapped up in it.
After seeing Guardians of the Galaxy, I thought I’d seen the best that Marvel films could be, but this one is a close second. This is a movie you need to see in the theater. It won’t be the same at home later on. Captain America: Civil War is going to change everything for the superhero movies. You need to check it out. You will love it.
