The fourth volume in the series, reveals a shock. Amicus is retiring from his role and is now searching for the new librarian of the Haunted Mansion. But he need not search for long, for he believes he has found the perfect replacement, Prudence Prock, a very famous horror novelist. When she is mysteriously invited to a horror story contest, she decides to go and investigate. When at the party, she is astounded by how realistic the “special effects” were. When she realizes it is not fake, she is sure she has gone insane. Now at an asylum, the fun truly starts to begin.
The illustrations were absolutely to die for. They really helped me to picture the characters and felt very realistic. I also enjoyed the commentary of Amicus Arcane himself. The fact that the stories were scary, but not to where I had nightmares, was simply wonderful.
While the book itself was not dreadful, the only thing I was disappointed about was the fact that since I, unfortunately, missed volumes 2 and 3, not everything in the book was understandable. Other than that, I loved this story. And now need to catch up and read the other two books.
Great for spooky storytime at sleepovers, or as a gift, this is a book that is too spookily delightful to miss. You could even say, you would kill, to have this book.
