Hello everyone!  I am back with a SUPER awesome book review of Mulan: Before the Sword by New York Times Best-Selling author Grace Lin. While I’m excited for the movie to come to theaters, this fun and exciting book is not based on the movie. In Mulan: Before the Sword, Mulan’s little sister, Xiu, is poisoned by a magical spider. Mulan must embark on a quest to cure her sister, led by the Jade Rabbit and accompanied by more famous Chinese legends. This book includes helpful backstories for many of these characters, which is helpful in understanding who they all are. I know you want to know what happens, but you will need to read the book to find out!

Mulan has always been a bit different from other girls. She was clumsy, she talked a lot, and she would rather ride her horse then do dull activities like weaving. She is nothing like her graceful and elegant, younger sister, Xiu. But one day, an evil, poisonous, nine-legged white spider bites Xiu, putting her in mortal danger. Mulan seeks a very famous healer, who turns out to be the Jade Rabbit. Mulan and the Jade Rabbit search for the cure, while the evil Daji attempts to thwart their plans. Encountering many magical beings – some good, some bad – Mulan faces many challenges. Check out my video review below!

Grace Lin is one of my favorite authors and illustrators. Her books are very detailed and make you feel as if you are a part of the story. Did you know she wrote When the Sea Turned to Silver and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon? She also included little short stories in those books, too. Her artwork is very calming and beautiful, and was even displayed in the White House in 2016!

Mulan: Before the Sword is a very thrilling book that I feel all Mulan fans will enjoy. It’s a great story that fills in the time between the original animated movie and the new one coming to theaters. It is a perfect book to just relax and read with.
