As the title says, this is a great book for great girls! Pencils, Pens, And Brushes: A Great Girls’ Guide To Disney Animation shares stories about the amazing women in Disney animation history. Some of the animators mentioned include Marge Champion, Mary Weiser, Grace Huntington, Mary Blair and more. If you love Disney and are interested in animation, this is a book you should not miss!
Animation is not limited to just drawing. There are many jobs that go into an animated feature. These jobs are explained at the end of the book in the “How it is Made” section. Besides artists, animation also requires voice actors, writers, editors, composers, camera operators and more. Pencils, Pens, And Brushes: A Great Girls’ Guide To Disney Animation shares women in these roles as well. The end of the book also includes a timeline of Walt Disney Animation.
One of the beautiful aspects of this book are the many inspirational quotes accompanied by beautiful artwork. These are scattered throughout the book. My favorite quote was,
“With ideas, talent, and hard work, too, there’s no limit to what Great Girls can do!”
This book is full of fun facts about the women in Walt Disney Animation. Did you know that Mary Weiser created the first paint lab? In dedication of Mary Weiser, the check-out at World of Disney in Disney Springs, is designed to look like her paint lab. Pretty cool, right? This book would not be complete without the very talented Mary Blair. If you are not familiar with Mary Blair, she designed and created the It’s A Small World dolls. She also worked on Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos.
This is a beautifully illustrated book with tons of Disney history, which makes this a great book choice for Disney fans. I think this book would be good for all ages, as the stories about each animator are not very long. They’re perfect to spark your interest to learn more.
