Jordan Peele’s newest adrenaline rush, NOPE has arrived and audiences are bewildered to know what Peele has in store next. A “cowboys and aliens” like adventure confuses and alarms audiences alike. Early on into the movie, after the psychotic chimpanzee manic, audiences meet O.J. (Daniel Kaluuya) and his ecstatic sister Emerald (Keke Palmer). These two work on their family ranch for Hollywood movies in one of Hollywood’s most beloved horse ranches. Following the bizarre death of O.J. Sr (Keith David), from flying metal in a storm, this brother sister duo is in for the unimaginable. The first animal to appear in a motion capture was a horse with a black jockey as the first screen character. This unnamed jockey happens to be a family ancestor and the family horse business has remained for generations.
Following a commercial shoot that goes awry, audiences are given important hint and teasers of the messy journey that audiences will get lost in — in a good way. O.J., plans on selling his horse Lucky, to Jupiter’s Claim (a western alien theme park), to Ricky “Jupe” (Steven Yuen), and then everything goes haywire. Continuous unanswered storms wrecks havoc until Emerald and O.J., get security cameras to catch what appears to be the unthinkable. The family duo meets Angel (Brandon Perea), a tech junkie who specializes in security and Angel invites himself to their farm to setup the equipment, and survey the area. The trio now together catches the unimaginable on the cameras and Emerald’s goal is to catch the “Oprah” shot.

Similar to Peele’s other movies like “Us” and “Get Out”, audiences are left with subtle clues, props and plot points that will be revisited throughout the movie — in the end, all making sense. Aside from Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer being the main characters, the true main characters of the movie are the various horses in the movie with Daniel and Keke working alongside them. At times the movie is slow, but Keke Palmer’s character helps make the dull moments memorable and witty. The consistency of confusion keeps audiences at the edge of the seats trying to put each piece of the puzzle together to uncover the mystery that is lurking in the clouds and causing chaos at Haywood Ranch.
Nope, in theaters July 22, has a runtime of 2 hours and 11 minutes and is rated R for some violence, bloody images, and language throughout.
Audiences who are a fan of Jordan Peele’s provocative horror films are in for a riveting new take on horror and should say “Yup!” to Nope.
