disclosure: I was invited to a special screening of The Fall Guy in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. No other compensation was received. This post may contain affiliate links.

I am a child of the 70s & 80s. Let me clarify that – I am a TV child of the 70s & 80s. I was a big fan of the Lee Majors TV show, The Fall Guy. It was always action packed – you never knew what was going to happen next. These were the days of no pause or rewind button – or even a DVR button to record the show. And you carefully waited through commercials and patiently awaited the next episode the following week because you did not want to miss a thing. But life goes on, and these small, beloved things go to the wayside – until we are reminded of them.

Emily Blunt is Judy Moreno in THE FALL GUY, directed by David LeitchWhen I saw the first trailer for The Fall Guy, I immediately flashed back to those TV moments and remembered this show. Since it was a series that ran for quite a few years(1981-86), I knew it would be an inspired movie, not a full remake. But let’s be real – most spin-offs or remakes lack the original spark that we remember so dearly. Would #TheFallGuyMovie fall into that stereotype or would it stand out on its own? To say I was nervous would be an understatement. I grabbed my “I should have been born in the 80s” teenager and off we went to see if Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling had what it takes.

Goodness, did we get more than we bargained for. Writing a spoiler-free review is HARD, especially this one – because I really want to tell you ALL of the things. But I won’t do that. Spoiler free, let’s chat about The Fall Guy and why you should go and see this movie, possibly multiple times. It’s THAT good.

About The Fall Guy

From real life stunt man and director David Leitch, the blockbuster director of Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and the producer of John Wick, Nobody and Violent Night, comes his most personal film yet. A new hilarious, hard-driving, all-star apex-action thriller and love letter to action movies and the hard-working and under-appreciated crew of people who make them: The Fall Guy.

Oscar® nominee Ryan Gosling (Barbie, La La Land, Drive) stars as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who, having left the business a year earlier to focus on both his physical and mental health, is drafted back into service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie—being directed by his ex, Jody Moreno, played by Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Placefilms, Sicario)—goes missing. As the mystery around the missing star deepens, Colt will find himself ensnared in a sinister, criminal plot that will push him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt.

The cast of The Fall Guy really hits the mark. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have phenomenal chemistry, which really carries this movie. The Fall Guy also stars Winston Duke, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, and Stephanie Hsu.

Is this a family-friendly movie?

THE FALL GUYThe Fall Guy is rated PG-13 for action and violence, drug content and some strong language and runs for 2 hours and 5 minutes. There are many scenes depicting blood, the effects of drugs and alcohol, and dangerous stunts. While there are no sex scenes, there are plenty of references and innuendos.  This is an action-packed rom-com, suitable for teens and older. I do not feel this movie would hold the interest of children under the age of 13.

My Thoughts

The Fall Guy was absolutely nothing that we anticipated it to be. It was a fun movie to watch, as it was the perfect balance of action, adventure, romance and comedy. There were a few comedic parts that gave off parody vibes, but they were well placed and not too often. Some parts of the movie did feel silly, but that was offset by the action.

At one point during the movie, my 16 year old was literally on the edge of her seat. She even asked if we could see it again. And you know, the approval of a 16 year old is just about everything.

I highly recommend that you sit through the entirety of the credits. There are a few things you will not want to miss. The Fall Guy is just one of those movies you do not get up from until it is competely over.

The Fall Guy is in theaters now – grab your tickets and have an amazing time. Tell me what you thought afterwards!
