The epic sequel to a 1996 cult classic, Twisters spins into theaters today(July 19th) and promises to be the hit of the summer. Since seeing the first trailer, the whole family was excited to see this next chapter. We were invited to a special advance screening, in Dolby nonetheless. After 122 heart-pounding minutes, is it really the hit-movie of the summer? Will it achieve cult classic status as the original did? Did it do Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton justice?

Let’s discuss…

About the Movie

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the Oscar® nominated writer-director of Minari, Twisters stars Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing, Normal People) and Glen Powell (Anyone But You, Top Gun: Maverick) as opposing forces who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.

Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos, In the Heights) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

My Thoughts

Let’s be real here. The special effects are what this movie is all about. This is not a movie you watch – it is an EXPERIENCE. The start of the movie sets the pace for this action-ride. If you thought the original was good and kept your heart racing, just wait. The twisters shown in this movie are so intense, your heart will race in these scenes. I cannot implore you enough to see this movie in Dolby. You will not regret it.

TWISTERS Tornado WranglersTwisters does not acknowledge its predecessor, albeit a small Dorothy cameo. There were so many missed opportunities for this, I felt there should have been some sort of nod to Twister. I sat on the edge of my seat watching for one just as much as I did for the intense scenes.

The storyline for Twisters is severely lacking. It’s your typical cheesy, rom-com, girl-meets-boy-and-is-severely-aggravated-by-him-but-then-falls-for-him kind of movie. If you can overlook this whole thing, the effects are worth seeing Twisters for.

Overall

Twisters is a crazy-intense movie that hits all the bullet points for a summer movie – intense action, rom-com, and super special effects that will blow you away(pun intended). We didn’t just watch a tornado blow by on the screen – we FELT it.

The storyline is definitely the worst part of this movie. Plot holes and character weakness are the biggest struggle. As long as you are not trying to follow along with the story, you will enjoy the movie. There is chemistry between Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, which helps.

Twisters, in theaters July 19, is rated PG-13 for intense action and peril, some language and injury images.
