Here we go again. One of the most hyped movies of the summer, JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH, is in theaters just in time for the holiday weekend. Directed by Gareth Edwards(Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH presents a star-studded cast, stunning visuals, a great score and the real reason people are seeing this movie….dinosaurs!

JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH is exactly what the title says – rebirth. It’s a new story – a different plot line. While this is a new beginning, the movie begins with a 17 year old flashback, showing you how important it is to be careful with your trash. And then you flash forward to present day. The dinosaurs are still around, but people have grown bored of them. They are becoming problematic for everyone, except those that would like to profit off them. Long story short, a covert team is assembled to collect blood samples from three rather large, living, scary dinosaurs living in scary parts of the world. Who else should head this team but bada$$ girlie Scarlett Johansson. Her team consists of Jonathon Bailey(WICKED, Bridgerton) and Mahershala Ali(ETERNALS), and that is really all you need to know. The storyline really falls apart and halfway through this 2 hour and 14 minute movie, you will forget the objective here. There is a random family consisting of a single dad, older (teen/maybe 20’s) daughter and her lackadaisical (& probably high) boyfriend and younger daughter(a Dora the Explorer look alike with longer hair) who are thrown into the mix(because why not) and will eventually grow on you because you have forgotten the purpose of the movie.

JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH will take you on an adventure. While the plot may be lacking, action and adventure are plentiful. There are tense moments, and way less comedy. Jonathon Bailey’s character does provide a bit of a tension reliever, along with the dead head boyfriend, but the overall vibe of the movie is action-action-action.

Visuals are exactly what you would expect from a Jurassic movie. There were a few times where the background was blatantly obvious, but most effects were flawless. And the dinosaurs? There were a few moments I jumped in my seat. The dinos were bigger, badder and better than ever. We saw the movie in Dolby(with the reclining seats).  I highly recommend this experience. There is nothing like being in a comfy seat with your seat vibrating with every dinosaur growl.

jurassic world rebirthThere are a few pop culture references throughout the movie. Whether these were intentional or not, I don’t know. There were a few scenes that were very reminiscent of Dinosaur(Disney’s Animal Kingdom), Land of the Lost(70’s tv show) and a brief glimpse of a dinosaur that looked somewhat like something from Stranger Things. My husband swears one of the dinosaurs was a clone of a Star Wars beast, too.

Let’s be honest. The Jurassic franchise has had a glorious run. Was JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH necessary? Absolutely not. But is it a fun movie to take the kids to this summer? YES. JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence/action, bloody images, some suggestive references, language and a drug reference(see above). And there are PLENTY of those instances.

I have never really been a Jurassic fan – but I do love a good dinosaur movie. Where this plot leaves a lot to be desired, the dinosaurs make up for what’s missing. They are big, bad and glorious, which makes the movie fun. This movie is perfect for older kids and grown-up dinosaur aficionados. It will definitely be a fun summer movie for that demographic. But if you are a die-hard Jurassic fan, I feel that this is not the movie you are expecting. This is geared for a younger generation who just want to see dinosaurs up close. Lucky for this generation, the door was left wide open for another sequel, that will undoubtedly follow the random family. There is no end credit scene following the movie.
