It seems that there were two groups of fans for Disney’s Hollywood Studios Sorcerer Mickey Hat icon – those that loved it and those that loved the thought of it gone! This week for Throwback Thursday, let’s revisit “The Hat.”
The Sorcerer Hat debuted in 2001, in honor of the 100 Years of Magic Celebration at Walt Disney World. The downfall of this large icon was that it blocked the view of the beautiful Chinese Theater, the home of the Great Movie Ride. Originally, “The Hat” served as an informational stop to learn about Walt Disney and his career. It was used for many different things – retail location(pin trading, hats), backdrop for stage shows, and even as the venue for the grand opening of Star Tours: The Adventure Continues. “The Hat” was removed in January, 2015. It took 49 days to take it down. The view of the theater now is simply stunning.
As a “throwback” bonus, if you look carefully at the photo, you can see Mulch, Sweat & Shears are performing in the background!
So, which group were you – Love the Hat or Take Down the Hat? Either way, it is now a part of the vast history of “Walt Disney World Throwbacks.”
First & foremost, I’m MOM! I have a Disney soul…am a DVC & D23 member, and a wannabe castmember. Magic seeker for life! I vacationed almost exclusively at WDW with my family as an adult and in the last couple years picked up my family to move there/here. And that’s where I am now…in Cinderella’s backyard with my family. I’m very happy to be a Disney local, at last.
